Iran started the brighter side, controlling the tempo through captain Milad Ebadipour's heavy hitting from the outside. Japan struggled to find their rhythm against Iran's aggressive serving and disciplined blocking, dropping the opening two sets 19-25 and 19-25 as Iran looked set for a statement win in Pool 4 of Week 2.

But the match turned decisively in the third set. Japan's coaching staff adjusted the defensive formation, bringing libero Tomohiro Ogawa deeper to handle Iran's serves, while setter Masahiro Sekita began feeding middle blocker Kentaro Takahashi and opposite hitter Yuji Nishida more frequently. The result was immediate: Japan swept the third set 25-20, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The fourth set was the tightest of the match. Iran led 23-22 with the chance to close out the match, but Japan reeled off three straight points — two from Nishida's explosive attacks and one from an ace by substitute Masato Kai — to take the set 25-23 and force a decider.

In the fifth set, Iran briefly led 6-5 before Japan's blocking wall reasserted itself. Middle blockers Kentaro Takahashi and Taishi Onodera combined for several crucial stuff blocks, and Nishida's jump serve broke Iran's reception, helping Japan race to an 11-10 lead. Kai served an ace to seal the match, and Japan closed it out 15-10.

Japan's switch to a 5-1 system at the start of the third set, with Sekita as the sole setter, unlocked their offence. In the first two sets, Japan hit at just 38%. Over the final three sets, that climbed to 52%. The change also freed up Nishida, who had been neutralised by Iran's double-block coverage in the opening stanzas.

Yuji Nishida (Japan) — The opposite hitter finished as the match's leading scorer with a match-high point total, including several aces and blocks. His serving in the fifth set broke Iran's momentum at critical moments.

Milad Ebadipour (Iran) — Iran's captain and outside hitter carried the offence with a match-high scoring contribution, displaying explosive power from the left pin. He was instrumental in the first two sets but was increasingly double-blocked as the match wore on.

Masahiro Sekita (Japan) — The setter's decision-making after the tactical switch was exemplary. He distributed precisely with minimal errors and orchestrated Japan's transition game efficiently.

Kentaro Takahashi (Japan) — The middle blocker contributed key points, but his defensive presence — multiple blocks — was the difference in the fourth and fifth sets.

Player of the match: Yuji Nishida (Japan)

Japan's attacking efficiency improved markedly as the match progressed. After hitting well below their tournament average in the first two sets, they posted significantly higher efficiency in sets three through five. Iran, by contrast, saw their efficiency drop sharply in the final three sets — a direct consequence of Japan's block adjustments.

The block count tells the story: Iran led in blocks after two sets; Japan finished with a comfortable advantage after the final three. Japan also served more aces than Iran, with several of those coming in the fifth set alone.

Japan's win keeps them near the top of the VNL 2026 standings, maintaining a perfect record in the preliminary phase. They are firmly on course for the Final Phase, held later this summer. Iran drop to 2-4 in the competition, having shown promise in patches but lacking the consistency to close out top-tier opponents.

Iran's next fixture is against Cuba on 27 June in Orléans, while Japan face USA on 27 June in what promises to be a top-of-the-table Pool 4 clash.

This was a match of two halves: Iran's controlled power met Japan's tactical resilience. Once Japan solved Iran's service pressure and adjusted their block timing, the momentum shifted irreversibly. Iran will rue the missed opportunity of a 2-0 lead, but Japan's depth and adaptability stamped them as genuine contenders for the 2026 VNL title.
