With Cuba leading 24-23 in the fourth set and set point to force a fifth, Iran's block held firm. A composed transition attack brought them level at 24-24. From there, Iran won the next two big rallies, with a Cuban attack error handing Iran match point at 29-28, and a well-placed kill sealed the 30-28 victory. That sequence took just over two minutes but decided the entire match — had Cuba won the set, momentum would have swung decisively their way.

Iran's outside hitters led the charge. Their captain and primary attacker registered a match-high in kills, consistently finding gaps in the Cuban block. The Iranian setter orchestrated a balanced offence that kept Cuba guessing, spreading the ball effectively across the front row.

For Cuba, the middle blockers improved as the match progressed, particularly in the third set where they stifled several Iranian attacks. The Cuban opposite spiker carried much of the offensive load, keeping his side competitive in the crucial fourth set.

The official scoreline of 3-1 flatters Iran slightly in terms of the closeness of the contest. The combined point differential across all four sets was just nine points (100-96 in Iran's favour). Iran's ability to win both of the first two sets by comfortable margins (25-22, 25-21) reflected superior execution in serve-and-pass phases. Cuba's resurgence in the third set (25-20) came from an improved block that slowed Iran's primary attackers. The fourth-set tiebreak drama highlighted both teams' resilience but ultimately Iran's composure in the clutch.

The win gave Iran their second victory of the 2026 VNL campaign after a difficult week. They entered the Orléans pool having been swept 3-0 by the USA on June 25 and suffered a five-set defeat to Japan earlier in the week. The result lifts them slightly in the standings ahead of the final preliminary week.

Cuba, playing their last match of Week 2, conclude the Orléans round without a win in the pool. They lost to the USA (0-3), France (2-3) and Serbia earlier in the week. The Caribbean side will need to regroup before Week 3 to keep their Finals hopes alive.

Both teams now travel to the final preliminary round in the third week of the VNL, where places in the VNL Finals in Łódź will be decided.

A hard-fought contest that could have gone either way if Cuba had converted their fourth-set opportunity. Iran's mental toughness in extra points made the difference. For Cuba, there are plenty of positives to take from the fightback, but winless Week 2 leaves little margin for error in the final round.
