The South Americans seized control from the opening serve. Brazil's aggressive serving and sharp blocking overwhelmed Canada in the first set, which ended 25-17. But Canada reset quickly in the second. The North Americans tightened their defence and capitalised on Brazilian errors to take it 25-23 and level the match.

The third set was the turning point of the contest. Canada led for much of the set and held set point at 24-23, but Brazil showed composure, saved set point and edged ahead 26-25 before closing it out 28-26 on their second opportunity. Darlan Souza delivered crucial points from the opposite position in the clutch moments.

Rather than folding, Canada responded again. They dominated the fourth set with efficient attacking and pushed the match to a tie-break with a 25-22 win.

The deciding set was a tense, point-for-point affair. Canada took an early lead and held match point at 14-13, needing just one more point to force a golden set. But Brazil's defence stiffened. A kill block levelled the score at 14-14, and back-to-back misses from the Canadian attack handed Brazil a 17-15 victory.

The third set proved decisive. Canada led 24-23 and looked set to take a 2-1 lead in sets. Brazil's ability to save a set point and rally to win 28-26 changed the momentum. Had Canada won that set, they would have been one set away from their second VNL win of the season.

Darlan Souza (Brazil) – The Brazilian opposite carried the scoring load, producing key kills in the tightest moments, particularly in sets three and five. His ability to score in transition was the difference when sets were on the line.

Sharone Vernon-Evans (Canada) – Canada's opposite was their most reliable attacker throughout the match, pacing the Canadian offence and helping them build leads in sets three and five.

Brazilian blocking unit – Brazil's net defence delivered critical stops in set five, including a game-changing block at 14-14 that turned the final set in their favour.

The 5-set scoreline (25-17, 23-25, 28-26, 22-25, 17-15) tells the story of a match that swung on fine margins. Brazil won the first set comfortably but had to grind through every subsequent set, with four of the five sets decided by three points or fewer. The 17-15 fifth set — the maximum possible margin in a deciding set — underscores how evenly matched the two sides were on the day.

Brazil had entered the match on a three-game losing streak in Ljubljana, having fallen to Ukraine, Italy and Slovenia in succession after going undefeated in Week 1. Canada, meanwhile, arrived with just one win from seven outings and remain rooted near the bottom of the standings.

Brazil improve to 5-3 (13 points) and hold 8th place in the 18-team VNL standings, inside the qualification zone for the Finals. Canada drop to 1-7 (8 points) and remain 16th, with only China and Cuba below them.

Next for Brazil: they face Belgium in Week 3. Next for Canada: they take on Japan in Week 3 as they look to build on a competitive showing against the Brazilians.

Brazil got the win they desperately needed to stop the rot, but Canada pushed a top-eight side to the limit. The Canadians have shown they can compete — but turning these narrow losses into wins remains the challenge.
