The opening set was a marathon. Neither side could break clear through regulation, with both teams trading points into extra time before Bulgaria edged it 30-28 — a decisive psychological blow in a set that could have gone either way.

Bulgaria carried that momentum into the second, winning 25-22 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Spain, facing elimination, responded in the third set. They tightened their defence at the net and forced errors from the Bulgarian attack, taking the set 25-19 to keep the match alive.

But the Bulgarian side regathered in the fourth. They reasserted control from the first whistle, racing to a comfortable lead and closing out the set 25-16, sealing the match 3-1.

The first set proved decisive. At 28-28, Spain had two opportunities to take the lead, but Bulgaria held firm, won the next two points, and denied Spain the early advantage. Had Spain taken that set, the match might have followed a very different trajectory — instead, Bulgaria had the belief to withstand Spain's third-set fightback.

Bulgaria's attacking unit carried the load, particularly in the clutch moments of the first and fourth sets. The Bulgarian service game also proved effective, disrupting Spain's reception enough to create transition opportunities throughout the match.

For Spain, their resilience in the third set — winning 25-19 after dropping two tight sets — showed genuine character. The Spanish defence improved markedly in that period, but they could not sustain the level through the fourth set.

The set scores tell the story of a match that was closer than the 3-1 margin suggests. The 30-28 first set alone consumed almost as many points as an entire straight-sets match. Spain's third-set win (25-19) showed they could match Bulgaria at their best, but the 25-16 final set exposes the gap in consistency: Bulgaria raised their level when it mattered most, while Spain faded under sustained pressure.

This was the opening Pool D fixture in the preliminary phase of the 2026 FIVB Boys' U17 World Championship in Doha, Qatar (19–29 August). Bulgaria start their campaign with a win, while Spain drop to 0-1 and must win their remaining pool matches to keep qualification hopes alive.

The top two teams from each pool, plus the four best third-placed sides, advance to the Round of 16. Both teams are contesting the second edition of the tournament, following the inaugural 2024 event in Sofia.
