Pittsburgh Pirates vs Detroit Tigers

Detroit struck first against Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski with a patient, two-out rally in the opening inning. Gleyber Torres walked and scored on Zach McKinstry's single to centre, and Hao-Yu Lee followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The lead doubled in the second. Torres singled again with two outs, and McGonigle crushed a 0-1 cutter 405 feet to the right-centre concourse for his 13th home run of the season, stretching the advantage to 4-0.

McKinstry finished 3-for-4 with a double and a walk. Lee reached base five times on the night — three singles and two walks — and drove in two.

Rookie Max Clark added an RBI single in the fifth (part of a two-hit night), pushing the score to 5-0. The Pirates got one back in the bottom half when Jake Mangum scored on a throwing error by Lee at second base.

The game appeared to be put away in the sixth. Detroit loaded the bases on three walks by reliever Yohan Ramírez, with McGonigle scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Lee before rookie Brett Callahan lined a two-run single to make it 8-1.

Pittsburgh roared back in the bottom of the sixth, turning an 8-1 deficit into 8-5. Tigers starter Framber Valdez, who had allowed just one unearned run through five innings, ran into trouble with two outs. After a double by Nick Gonzales, Valdez walked Rafael Flores Jr. and Jake Mangum to load the bases. Nick Yorke cleared them with a double to left-centre on a 92-mph sinker, trimming the lead to 8-4.

Kyle Finnegan relieved Valdez and surrendered an RBI single to Henry Davis, making it 8-5. But the Pirates' momentum stalled in the seventh. An error by Javier Báez and a walk put two aboard with one out before lefty Drew Sommers entered and retired five straight batters, striking out three across 1⅔ scoreless innings.

Kenley Jansen closed it out with a perfect ninth, striking out Esmerlyn Valdez (on a successful pitch-framing challenge by catcher Dillon Dingler) and Bryan Reynolds. Jansen needed just eight pitches — seven strikes — for his 16th save of the season, moving within eight of joining Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman in the 500-save club.

Kevin McGonigle, 3B, DET: 2-for-6, HR (13), 2 RBI, 2 R. Snapped a 2-for-19 skid with the decisive home run. Credited hitting coach Michael Brdar for helping him simplify his approach. “I was getting too antsy in the box, trying to do too much,” he told the Detroit News.

Framber Valdez, SP, DET (W, 8-8): 5⅔ IP, 5 H, 5 R (4 ER), 4 BB, 5 SO, 91 pitches. Dominated through five innings before unravelling with two outs in the sixth. “Unfortunately, that sixth inning is going to take a little away from Framber’s night,” manager AJ Hinch said, per the Detroit News. “But he was really good tonight.”

Hao-Yu Lee, 2B, DET: 3-for-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI, R. Reached base five times in five plate appearances.

Nick Yorke, 3B, PIT: 2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI. His bases-clearing double injected life into the Pirates’ comeback.

Drew Sommers, RP, DET (H, 9): 1⅔ IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO. Five straight outs to extinguish the Pirates’ rally. “I just throw strikes,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Kenley Jansen, RP, DET (S, 16): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 8 pitches.

The Tigers’ 14 hits to Pittsburgh’s six illustrate a game controlled at the plate early and survived late. Detroit scored five of their eight runs with two outs, manufacturing rallies through walks (eight total by Pirates pitchers) and timely singles rather than power — only McGonigle’s homer left the yard. The Pirates’ four-run sixth was their only productive inning, generating all five hits and five runs across the fifth and sixth frames. Valdez’s exit after 5⅔ innings (91 pitches) exposed the Tigers bullpen to 3⅓ innings, but Sommers and Jansen covered the final seven outs on just 30 combined pitches.

The Tigers (61-64) climbed into a three-way tie with Baltimore and Texas for the AL’s third wild-card berth. Detroit sits 4.5 games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The Pirates dropped to 61-66, 5.5 games back in the NL wild-card chase.

Next up: Game two of the three-game series on Tuesday (18 August). RHP Keider Montero (9-7, 3.22 ERA) starts for Detroit against Pirates RHP Braxton Ashcraft (12-5, 3.88 ERA).

Detroit’s early two-out hitting built a lead that proved just enough, even after Valdez’s late stumble. The Tigers’ ability to manufacture runs with two outs and close through Sommers and Jansen will decide whether they hold on in a wild-card race with six teams within a single game.
