Milwaukee Brewers vs Seattle Mariners

Entering the fifth inning, this was a taut 1-0 ballgame. Jake Bauers had manufactured the game's only run in the first, scoring on a William Contreras single after a chaotic, controversial collision at the plate with Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh - a play that would have been hotly debated in a tighter contest. Bryce Miller (4-7) had held Milwaukee in check, retiring nine straight at one point.

Then the dam broke.

Milwaukee sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fifth inning, capped by Christian Yelich's three-run homer with two outs - the first of four Brewers home runs on the night. Miller was removed after that at-bat, charged with six runs over 4 2/3 innings.

The Brewers scored five more in the sixth on David Hamilton's three-run shot (his fourth of the season) and Jake Bauers' two-run blast (his 22nd). The game hung in the balance until the fifth-inning sequence that turned a 1-0 nail-biter into a 6-0 rout. Mariners manager Dan Wilson shouldered responsibility for leaving Bryce Miller in to face Christian Yelich with two outs.

"That decision's on me," Wilson told MLB.com. "Accountability's there. It's on me. It starts and stops there. ... Wanted to get Bryce through there, but just didn't make the right choice, and it cost us."

Yelich deposited a hanging splitter into the seats, and the Brewers never looked back.

Gary Sanchez (MIL) - The Brewers catcher pitched the ninth, working around two hits to close out the shutout.

In the eighth inning, with the Brewers already leading 19-0, Christian Yelich lifted a sacrifice fly to deep centre. Mariners centre fielder Julio Rodriguez made the catch, then casually tossed the ball into the stands - believing it was the third out. It was only the second. The error awarded the runners two extra bases, pushing the score to 21-0.

"You obviously never want to be the guy that does that," Yelich said. "But it's a long game, you're on defence for a while, and it was kind of chaos there in the last inning with the lineup turning over and all the action going. It just happens sometimes. You lose track of the outs."

The box score shows 22 hits to 5, four errors by Seattle to none by Milwaukee, and a four-home-run outburst from a Brewers team that entered the night last in the majors with 117 home runs. Those numbers tell a simple story: Seattle's pitching staff, depleted by the early hook of Miller, had no answer once Milwaukee's bats heated up, while four Mariners errors turned would-be inning-enders into additional scoring opportunities. The 22-hit, 22-run conversion rate (1.00 runs per hit) is remarkable efficiency - any team that tallies 22 hits and scores all 22 of them is punishing nearly every baserunner.

The Brewers improved to 78-48, tightening their grip atop the National League Central. For Seattle, the 22-0 loss was their 12th shutout of the season and dropped them to 59-67. It was the worst loss in Mariners franchise history, surpassing a 21-1 defeat to Houston on September 8, 2019. The 22-0 scoreline ties the largest shutout in MLB's Modern Era (since 1900), matching the Pittsburgh Pirates' 22-0 win over the Cubs in 1975 and the Cleveland Guardians' 22-0 victory over the Yankees in 2004. It is also the most lopsided shutout anywhere in MLB since June 28, 1887.

Milwaukee host Seattle again on Wednesday, while the Mariners look to "flush it," as catcher Cal Raleigh put it: "Obviously, you don't ever want to get beaten like that. But at the same time, move on, flush it, go to the next one."

A scoreline that looks like a typo - and is. The Brewers played near-perfect baseball for four innings and absolutely flawless baseball for the other five, while the Mariners suffered a complete breakdown in every phase. This was not a competitive game disguised by the score; it was a competitive game that became an all-timer once Milwaukee's offence found its groove and Seattle's self-destructed.
