Chicago Cubs vs Chicago White Sox

For five innings, neither side could score. Cubs starter Clay Holmes worked through five scoreless frames, generating 12 ground-ball outs, while White Sox opener Sean Newcomb tossed two hitless innings before handing the ball to Urquidy.

The deadlock broke in the sixth. Miguel Vargas led off with an automatic double after Ian Happ's left-field catch attempt failed and the ball lodged in the ivy. Andrew Benintendi followed with an RBI single to right, giving the White Sox a 1-0 lead.

The Cubs' best chance came in the bottom half. Tyrone Taylor — who had both of Chicago's hits on the day — ripped a leadoff double into the left-field corner. Taylor tagged from second but was thrown out at third by six steps on a 95.1 mph throw from Montgomery, the fastest tracked assist by a White Sox outfielder since July 2023.

The White Sox added insurance in the eighth against reliever Ryan Rolison. Vargas walked, pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk doubled and Montgomery followed with a two-run double off the glove of first baseman Michael Busch.

Grant Taylor worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save, completing a two-hitter.

Tyrone Taylor's sixth-inning baserunning gamble. With the Cubs trailing 1-0 and their most dangerous hitter (Crow-Armstrong) at the plate, Taylor led off with a double but was erased on the relay from Montgomery to third baseman Vargas after a delayed tag-up. Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the misjudgement: "He got a little bit of a bad read. He was a little late tagging. There wasn't much offence coming, it didn't look like."

The Cubs never put another runner in scoring position.

José Urquidy (W, 2-1) — Player of the Match: Six innings, two hits, zero runs, zero walks, eight strikeouts on 68 pitches. Urquidy struck out eight of the first nine outs he recorded, using a six-pitch mix headlined by his sinker. He became the sixth pitcher in White Sox franchise history to record eight or more strikeouts in a scoreless relief outing.

Braden Montgomery: Two hits, including the decisive two-run double in the eighth. Also threw out Tyrone Taylor at third with a 95.1 mph strike from right field — the key defensive play of the game.

Clay Holmes (L, 5-6): The Cubs' right-hander allowed one run on six hits over 5⅓ innings with two walks. Over his last two starts at Wrigley Field, Holmes has surrendered one earned run in 12 combined innings.

Sam Antonacci: The White Sox left fielder made a leaping catch against the ivy to rob Alex Bregman of extra bases — and what Statcast measured as a would-be home run, blown back by the wind — in the seventh inning.

The Cubs managed only two hits, both from Tyrone Taylor — their lowest output of the season at Wrigley. Urquidy's eight strikeouts in relief neutralised a Cubs lineup that had scored 10 runs in the previous two games combined. The White Sox's nine hits were scattered but timely: they stranded only six runners and went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while the Cubs went 0-for-3. Montgomery's 95.1 mph assist was the hardest by a White Sox outfielder since Oscar Colas's 100.9 mph throw in 2023. Per Statcast, the wind at Wrigley pulled Bregman's deep fly in by six feet, turning a would-be homer into the final out of the seventh.

The White Sox (66-60) stay within striking distance of a wild-card spot and earned a split of the six-game season series against their crosstown rivals. The Cubs (74-54) remain comfortably positioned in the National League Central race despite the shutout. Next up: the White Sox host the Atlanta Braves on Thursday (Anthony Kay vs. Grant Holmes), while the Cubs travel to Seattle on Friday (starters TBD).

Urquidy's six-inning relief stint was the story — dominant, efficient, and exactly what the White Sox needed after two gut-wrenching losses. The Cubs, flat for the first time in the series, will point to the Taylor baserunning blunder and Bregman's wind-affected fly as what-ifs, but the truth is simpler: they couldn't touch Urquidy, and the White Sox defence made every play count.
