Texas Rangers vs Washington Nationals

The game was a pitcher's duel from the first pitch. Andrew Alvarez (2-5), the Nationals' rookie left-hander, matched deGrom through two scoreless innings.

Corey Seager broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third. With one out, the Rangers shortstop drove a 1-0 pitch from Alvarez deep to center field for his 12th home run of the season, putting Texas ahead 1-0.

That was all deGrom needed. The two-time NL Cy Young winner retired 15 of the 19 batters he faced, walking one and allowing only a Brady House single in the second. He struck out the side in the fourth — Abimelec Ortiz, Andrés Chaparro and José Tena all went down swinging — and finished with 10 strikeouts on 94 pitches.

Washington never advanced a runner past second base. The Nationals went hitless over the final seven innings.

Texas added an insurance run in the eighth. Ezequiel Duran led off with a triple to deep right field off reliever Tom Cosgrove and scored on pinch-hitter Nicky Lopez's sacrifice fly to center, making it 2-0.

Jakob Junis and Chase Silseth each threw a scoreless inning of relief before Jacob Latz nailed down the save — his 25th of the season — with a 1-2-3 ninth featuring three strikeouts.

The real swing came in the third inning. Before Seager's homer, the game had been a dead even stalemate — neither team had managed a hit with a runner in scoring position, and both starters were cruising. Seager's solo shot changed the complexion entirely: it forced the Nationals to play from behind against a red-hot deGrom, a task that proved impossible on a night Washington's lineup struck out 14 times.

The box score tells a clean story: the Rangers out-hit Washington 6-1 and struck out 14 Nationals batters against just one of their own. deGrom generated 16 swinging strikes on 94 pitches (17%), consistently working ahead in the count against a Nationals lineup that has struggled all season against elite right-handed pitching. Washington went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position; Texas went 0-for-7 but did not need a clutch hit — Seager's homer and Duran's triple-turned-sac-fly both came with the bases empty.

The Rangers' bullpen was equally impressive: Junis, Silseth and Latz combined for three perfect innings with six strikeouts, allowing no hits and one walk. Texas pitching finished with 14 strikeouts overall — the third time in the three-game series a staff reached double-digit Ks.

The Rangers (63-65) took the series 2-1 after splitting the first two games via shutout. Texas sits second in the AL West but remains nine games back of the division lead. The Rangers travel to face the Los Angeles Angels next, with first pitch on Friday, August 21 at 8:07 p.m. CT.

For Washington (61-68), the loss drops them to fourth in the NL East, nine games back of the division lead. The Nationals head to Miami for a three-game weekend series against the Marlins, starting Friday, August 21 at 7:10 p.m. ET.

A textbook pitchers' duel won by a single swing. deGrom looked every bit the ace the Rangers envisioned when they signed him — efficient, dominant and in complete control from the first inning. The Nationals' offence, which exploded for six runs the night before, never threatened. When both rotations are on, this series proved runs can be scarce in Arlington.
