Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Angels

The 4th inning was the inflection point. Peter Lambert entered the frame having allowed four runs across the first three innings — manageable — but base hits from Josh Lowe and Frazier, combined with Lambert's wild pitch and a walk to Meckler, loaded the bases with one out. A Nolan Schanuel pop-out brought two outs, but instead of escaping, Lambert watched Neto single, Ballesteros single and Grissom double in rapid succession. The Astros went from a 4-2 deficit to a 10-2 hole in the space of four batters. Bryan King relieved Lambert but the damage was done.

Zach Neto (LAA) — 5-for-5, 2 R, 7 RBI, 2B, HR. A perfect night at the plate from the 25-year-old shortstop. Neto recorded hits in every at-bat: an RBI single in the 1st, another RBI single in the 4th, a three-run homer in the 5th, an RBI double in the 7th, and a single in the 8th. His 7 RBIs are a career high. He also drove in runs with two outs on three separate occasions.

Vaughn Grissom (LAA) — 3-for-6, 3 RBI, 2B. Switched between third base and first base as the game progressed. His two-run double in the 4th inning broke the game open and he added a sacrifice fly later.

Moises Ballesteros (LAA) — 2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2B, 2 R. The 23-year-old rookie doubled in the 2nd to ignite a rally and singled home two more in the 4th.

Grayson Rodriguez (LAA, W, 4-5) — 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 6 K. Rodriguez was the beneficiary of the run support, but his own line was quietly excellent. Both runs against him were unearned — the first on Grissom's throwing error and the second on a wild pitch. He threw 99 pitches (73 strikes) against a Houston lineup that entered the night averaging 4.7 runs per game.

Player of the Match: Zach Neto.

The Angels put 44 batters to the plate and got 18 hits, scoring in every frame from the 2nd through the 7th and again in the 9th. The 18 runs matched their hit total — a clean 1:1 conversion rate. Seven of nine Angels starters recorded at least one hit. Neto alone collected more total bases (9) than the entire Astros lineup (8 hits, no extra-base knocks).

Houston's three runs came on eight hits, but the Astros went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and never solved Rodriguez after the 1st inning. Rodriguez's 7 innings of scoreless work — official scoring notwithstanding — marked his longest outing of the season.

For the Angels (51-77), this is a hollow but undeniable statement win at the home of the AL West leaders — who now hold just a one-game lead in the division despite the large gap in overall record. For the Astros (64-64), dropping a game this emphatically at home against a last-place team raises questions about their staying power down the stretch. They fall to .500 for the first time since June 3.

Both teams continue their four-game series on Friday. The Angels send their next starter to the mound, while the Astros will look to reset after their worst defensive showing of the season.

A mismatch on paper turned into a mismatch on the field. The Angels ambushed Lambert early, buried the Astros in the 4th, and never relented. For all that this Angels season has lacked, Neto's five-hit, seven-RBI night stands as an individual performance worth remembering.
