Milwaukee Brewers vs Atlanta Braves

Both starters traded zeros through two innings before the Brewers struck in the third. Luis Lara led off with a single, Jackson Chourio followed with another, and after Brice Turang struck out, William Contreras lined an RBI single to centre that scored Lara for a 1-0 lead.

Andrew Vaughn then hit into a fielder's choice that erased Contreras at second, but Chourio scored to make it 2-0 Milwaukee. Jake Bauers struck out to end the inning.

Sale settled quickly after the third and retired eight of his final nine batters, finishing with six innings pitched, two earned runs on eight hits, six strikeouts and zero walks. He fell to 12-9 on the season with a 2.20 ERA.

The Braves finally broke through in the eighth against Milwaukee reliever Antonio Senzatela. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a walk, and Ronald Acuña Jr. reached on a fielder's choice that forced Yastrzemski at second, with Acuña advancing to second on a throwing error by Turang. After Drake Baldwin struck out, Matt Olson singled to put runners at the corners. Michael Harris II followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Acuña to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senzatela then walked Ozzie Albies to load the bases, but Mauricio Dubón lined out to right to end the threat.

Trevor Megill pitched a scoreless ninth, working around a two-out single by Yastrzemski (replaced by pinch-runner Lane Thomas), and struck out Acuña swinging to earn his 24th save of the season.

Luis Lara's leaping catch in the top of the sixth. With the Brewers leading 2-0 and one out, Matt Olson crushed a 98.6-mph four-seam fastball from Misiorowski 394 feet to deep centre field. Lara timed his jump perfectly at the wall, robbing Olson of extra bases and preserving the two-run lead through Misiorowski's final inning.

• William Contreras (MIL) — 4-for-4, RBI. The Brewers catcher reached base all four times against Sale and the Atlanta bullpen, driving in the game's first run with a third-inning single. Player of the Match.
• Jacob Misiorowski (MIL) — 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 96 pitches (W, 13-5). The young ace held the NL East-leading Braves scoreless, mixing a 98-mph fastball with a sharp breaking ball.
• Chris Sale (ATL) — 6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 94 pitches (L, 12-9). Sale's command was sharp (68 strikes) but the Brewers' three-hit third inning was enough to decide it.
• Michael Harris II (ATL) — 2-for-4, 2B (29), RBI. Drove in Atlanta's only run with a two-out single in the eighth.
• Luis Lara (MIL) — 1-for-3, R, spectacular leaping catch at the centre-field wall in the sixth to rob Matt Olson.
• Mike Yastrzemski (ATL) — 2-for-2, 2 BB. Reached base in all four plate appearances but was stranded twice.

Milwaukee out-hit Atlanta 9-8, but the difference was situational. The Brewers went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position; Atlanta went 1-for-7 and left nine men on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth. The combined three runs landed comfortably under the 6.5-run betting total, as expected from a matchup between two of MLB's five lowest-ERA qualified starters. Misiorowski generated eight swinging strikes on 96 pitches, while Sale induced 11 ground-ball outs but couldn't escape the third-inning jam.

The Brewers improved to 80-49, extending their lead atop the NL Central. Atlanta slipped to 75-54 but remained first in the NL East. The two division leaders continue their three-game series Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET at American Family Field.

A genuine ace duel delivered: two sub-2.20 ERAs, zero home runs, and a one-run game decided by a single inning of execution. Misiorowski's continued emergence and Contreras' relentless bat gave Milwaukee the edge in a game that could preview October baseball.
