Baltimore Orioles vs Tampa Bay Rays

The Orioles struck first in the bottom of the first. Jackson Holliday led off with a hit — the provider payload shows no specific hit type — and Alonso singled him in from centre field for a 1-0 lead.

The Rays answered emphatically in the top of the second. Junior Caminero scored on Chandler Simpson's single to right to tie the game, then rookie catcher Kenny Piper launched his first career home run to centre field, scoring Jorge Mateo and giving Tampa Bay a 3-1 lead.

Baltimore pulled one back immediately. Dylan Beavers led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to centre — his sixth of the season — cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The scoreboard stayed frozen until the bottom of the fifth. Coby Mayo scored on Jackson Holliday's sacrifice fly to centre, tying the game at 3-3. Two batters later, with Colton Cowser on base, Alonso crushed a Freddy Peralta pitch to centre field for a two-run homer that put the Orioles ahead 5-3.

Neither bullpen budged over the final four frames. Andrew Kittredge tossed a scoreless eighth, and Robert Garcia worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts for his sixth save.

Alonso's fifth-inning home run flipped the game decisively. Peralta had held Baltimore to two runs through four innings and had just surrendered the tying run on a sac fly. But Alonso turned on a pitch and sent it to straightaway centre, scoring Cowser on what proved to be the decisive blow. The 30-year-old first baseman now has 30 home runs in his first season with the Orioles after signing as a free agent in the offseason.

"Great, sure, awesome. But at the end of the day, I just want to win games," Alonso said, per MLB.com's Jake Rill, when asked about reaching 30 homers.

Rogers retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced after the second-inning hiccup, keeping the game within reach for the Orioles to mount their comeback. "I'm glad it's me not pitching against him anymore and I can sit in the dugout and actually enjoy homers when he hits them," Rogers said of Alonso, per the Baltimore Banner's Andy Kostka.
• Dylan Beavers (BAL): 1-for-3, R, HR (6), RBI. The rookie outfielder's solo shot in the second answered Tampa Bay's three-run top half and kept Baltimore within one.
• Freddy Peralta (TB): L (5-11), 7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 6 K. Peralta pitched into the eighth but was hurt by the long ball — Alonso's homer and Beavers' solo shot accounted for three of Baltimore's five runs.
• Kenny Piper (TB): 1-for-3, R, HR (1), 2 RBI. The Rays catcher opened his MLB home-run account at a timely moment, but Tampa Bay's offence managed only four hits after the second inning.

Player of the Match: Pete Alonso

The box score tells a story of two pitchers who traded punches before Alonso landed the knockout. Baltimore's eight hits to Tampa Bay's seven reflect a fairly even contest, but the quality of those hits tilted the game. The Orioles hit two home runs (Alonso, Beavers) to the Rays' one (Piper), and Baltimore's three-run fifth inning came against a pitcher who had allowed only two runs across the first four frames. Rogers' zero walks stand out — he pounded the strike zone (72.8% strikes) and never gave Tampa Bay free baserunners after the second inning, allowing his offence time to erase a two-run deficit.

The win improved the Orioles to 62-67, keeping them within 1.5 games of the final AL wild-card spot in a crowded race. The Rays dropped to 76-52, their lead in the AL East trimmed to 2.5 games over the idle New York Yankees. For Tampa Bay, the loss snapped a three-game winning streak and highlighted a growing concern: Peralta has lost four of his last five decisions since the All-Star break.

Baltimore's next fixture is against the New York Yankees on 22 August at Camden Yards. Tampa Bay travels to Toronto to face the Blue Jays on the same date.

A textbook example of a team that refuses to fold its season. The Orioles were down 3-1 after two innings against a first-place club and found a way — via Rogers' shutdown work and Alonso's power. For the Rays, wasting Peralta's decent start with silence from the bats after the second inning is a lesson in how quickly control of a game can evaporate.
