Both teams finished with eight hits, yet the game told two different stories. Cincinnati scored all three of its runs in a single inning (the third) and managed just three hits over the final six innings against five Arizona relievers. The Diamondbacks, by contrast, put traffic on the bases steadily after the fourth inning — eight hits and four walks across the final five frames.

Arizona's bullpen logged 6.0 innings of scoreless relief (4 H, 2 BB, 8 K) after Bratt's early exit. The Reds' bullpen was charged with all four runs in the decisive seventh, with Luis Mey taking the blown save (his first of the season). Abbott deserved a better fate — he'd allowed just one hit through three innings — but the Reds managed only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position after the third inning.

Arizona (69-62) won its third consecutive series and kept pace in the crowded National League Wild Card race. The Diamondbacks improved to 10-4 in their last 14 games since 9 August. They visit the New York Mets on 24 August for the start of a three-game set.

Cincinnati (62-69) dropped its second straight series and fell seven games below .500 for the first time since late July. The Reds head to San Francisco to face the Giants on 24 August.

Arizona's bullpen depth and timely hitting won this game as much as Cincinnati's inability to sustain offensive pressure after the third inning. Vargas' triple was the swing moment, but the Diamondbacks' relief corps — seven pitchers combining for 6.0 shutout innings — was the structural story.
