Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees

The final tally of 10 hits to 4 tells the story: Toronto consistently put traffic on the bases (nine runners left on) while the Yankees managed only four singles across nine innings. The Blue Jays used seven pitchers — a bullpen game against the AL's ERA leader — and held New York to one run. The Yankees have scored just two total runs during their three-game losing streak. Toronto's 10 hits were spread across eight different batters, reflecting the depth needed to replace Guerrero's bat.

Toronto (61-64) moved within one game of the final AL wild-card position with 37 games remaining. The Blue Jays have won 13 of their last 19 since August 1. The Yankees (68-55) dropped their third straight and have lost five of eight, slipping further behind Baltimore in the AL East race. New York's offence has scored two or fewer runs in five of its last eight games.

The Blue Jays are playing their best baseball of the season at exactly the right time. Without Guerrero, Toronto got contributions from the entire lineup and suffocated New York with seven pitchers. The Yankees, meanwhile, have an offence that has gone cold at the worst possible moment — two runs in three games is not a blip, it is a trend that threatens their playoff positioning.
