Minnesota Twins vs Philadelphia Phillies

Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (11-5) shook off leadoff doubles in each of the first two innings, striking out the side in order after Austin Martin's opening double to escape the first. He finished with nine strikeouts, two walks and one earned run over 6⅔ innings, lowering his ERA to 3.12.

The Phillies out-hit the Twins 13-9, but the distribution told the story. The Twins left seven runners on base and were 0-for-5 with RISP before Royce Lewis's RBI double in the sixth.

Luzardo's 109 pitches marked his second-highest workload of the season, a sign of the Phillies' trust in their ace in a tight race. His 177 strikeouts rank top-five among NL pitchers.

The Twins' 1.79 xG-equivalent offensive performance (nine hits, one extra-base hit beyond doubles) reflected a lineup that could not string together hits against Luzardo or the Phillies' bullpen, which tossed 2⅓ scoreless innings.

The Phillies improved to 66-58, holding second place in the NL East, 7.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. They remain firmly in the NL Wild Card picture with six weeks remaining.

The Twins dropped to 60-64, falling to 1.0 game back in the AL Wild Card race — part of a five-team cluster within one game of each other for the final two spots. Minnesota has lost two straight and four of its last six.

Phillies shortstop Trea Turner exited in the eighth inning after fouling a ball off his right knee. X-rays were negative, according to interim manager Don Mattingly. His status for Sunday is day-to-day.
