Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners

Houston struck first. Yordan Alvarez (single), Isaac Paredes (single) and Daulton Varsho (single) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, and Jose Altuve's infield single made it 1-0. Hancock escaped further damage by freezing Christian Walker on a borderline pitch and striking out Taylor Trammell.

Seattle answered emphatically in the second. Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor led off with back-to-back singles, and Cole Young tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice that Wesneski could not handle cleanly. Victor Robles then tripled into the right-centre gap — his second consecutive game with a triple (first Mariner to do so since Mallex Smith in July 2019) — scoring Naylor and Young for a 3-1 lead. Donovan capped the four-run frame with a two-out RBI single to make it 4-1.

Christian Vázquez cut the deficit to 4-2 with a solo homer (his sixth of the season) leading off the bottom of the second, but that was the last damage Hancock would allow for five innings.

Donovan struck again in the fourth with another two-out RBI single, scoring Young to push the lead to 5-2.

Hancock's 12-batter stretch of dominance defined the middle innings. After Vázquez's homer, the Mariners right-hander did not allow another baserunner until Taylor Trammell walked with one out in the seventh — and even then, Hancock struck out Cam Smith and got a caught-stealing to end the frame. Seattle's starter exited after seven with a 5-2 lead, having restored order after Houston's early momentum.

Cole Young, Mariners: 3-for-5, HR (15), 4 RBI. Young tied his career high for RBI, punctuating the night with a three-run blast off Ronel Blanco in the ninth — his 15th home run of the season.

Brendan Donovan, Mariners: 3-for-6, 3 RBI. Three separate run-scoring singles, each with two outs, drove home the lesson in situational hitting.

Emerson Hancock, Mariners: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7 K. The 27-year-old retired 12 straight at one point and matched his career high for innings pitched. His ERA dropped to 3.23.

Victor Robles, Mariners: 2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI. Robles became the first Mariner to triple in consecutive games since Mallex Smith in 2019 and sparked the decisive second inning.

Isaac Paredes, Astros: 2-for-4, two-run HR (16). Paredes' eighth-inning blast cut the lead to 7-4 and briefly gave Houston hope, but the Mariners answered emphatically.

Seattle's 15 hits to Houston's eight tell the story of a game controlled by the away side after the first inning. Six of the nine Mariners starters recorded multiple hits. The 4-run second inning effectively decided the contest — Seattle's bullpen never faced a save situation despite Paredes' late homer, because Young's ninth-inning blast restored a six-run cushion. Houston's two errors contributed to unearned opportunities, though Seattle's offence needed little help.

Hayden Wesneski (2-1) lasted only four innings in his fourth start since returning from Tommy John rehab, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. The Astros bullpen — Ronel Blanco, who gave up three runs in the ninth, and José A. Ferrer — could not contain a Mariners lineup that batted around in the second and ninth innings.

The Astros (62-61) maintain their hold on the AL West lead but have now dropped two of three in the series. The Mariners (58-65) — who entered this series on a six-game losing streak — have won two of three and kept their faint division hopes alive. The series concludes Sunday night at Minute Maid Park, with Bryan Woo (8-8, 4.15 ERA) facing Hunter Brown (3-2, 3.68 ERA).

Seattle's offence, dormant during their six-game slide, woke up with 15 hits and relentless two-out production. Hancock pitched like an ace when his team needed it most. The Astros, despite Paredes' brief spark, never truly threatened after the second inning — a worrying sign for a division leader whose rotation depth is being tested.
