Detroit Tigers vs Chicago White Sox

The decisive moment came in the top of the seventh. With Randal Grichuk on third after a leadoff double, Detroit elected to intentionally walk Miguel Vargas to bring up Benintendi against left-handed reliever Drew Sommers (0-3). Benintendi sliced a single through the left side that glanced off the glove of shortstop Kevin McGonigle, scoring Grichuk to make it 4-3.

It was a decision the Tigers would regret. Sommers, who had not faced more than six batters in any previous outing this season, was charged with the go-ahead run and the loss.

Eduardo Valencia (DET) — 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. The Tigers catcher provided both of Detroit's early answers and accounted for two-thirds of their offence.

Colson Montgomery (CWS) — His two-run double in the third proved vital, delivered on a nine-pitch battle against Melton after a prolonged slump (16-for-95 since the All-Star break).

Andrew Benintendi (CWS) — Two hits on the day, none bigger than the go-ahead single in the seventh. The veteran DH finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Jordan Hicks (CWS) — Entered with the game tied in the fifth and delivered 1⅔ scoreless innings (3 K, 0 H, 0 BB) to earn the win.

Bryan Hudson (CWS) — Retired the side in order in the ninth for his fifth save, striking out one.

Player of the Match: Andrew Benintendi — his go-ahead hit in the seventh swung the game.

Chicago outhit Detroit 12-7 but went just 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position — a rate that usually spells trouble but proved survivable because their pitching held the Tigers to a single hit over the final 3⅔ innings. The White Sox put the leadoff batter on base in six of the first seven innings, creating constant pressure despite the modest conversion rate. Detroit managed seven hits but stranded runners at key moments, failing to score after getting a runner to third with one out in the fifth.

The White Sox improved to 22-19 in one-run games — the kind of margin that often defines a division winner. More importantly, their 4½-game lead in the AL Central represents the largest cushion any team has held in the division this season. Having already secured back-to-back series wins over their closest pursuer, Chicago head into Sunday's finale with staff ace Sean Burke on the mound, eyeing a sweep.

Detroit have lost two straight after a strong run and now face a must-win situation on Sunday to avoid slipping further back in the division race.

The Tigers host the White Sox again on Sunday, August 16. Chicago return home to face the Tampa Bay Rays after the series concludes.

A taut, well-pitched divisional game decided by a single swing in the seventh. The White Sox bullpen — Hicks, Taylor and Hudson — dominated the final 12 outs, and that relief depth, combined with an offence that manufactures runs without needing the long ball, is why Chicago sit atop the AL Central. Detroit's inability to capitalise on early opportunities against a tiring Kay proved costly, and the gap at the top of the division is growing.
