New York Mets vs Washington Nationals

Washington struck first. Daylen Lile walked to lead off the second inning and scored on Keibert Ruiz's two-out single to right-centre. Abimelec Ortiz extended the lead to 2–0 in the third with a solo home run to centre field, his fifth of the season.

The Mets answered in the bottom of the fourth. Jared Young drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a Bo Bichette single, and scored on Jorge Polanco's groundout to first. Two batters later, with Brett Baty on second, Luis Torrens turned on a 92.2 mph four-seam fastball from Jake Irvin and drove it 406 feet to centre field for a two-run homer — his sixth of the season — giving the Mets a 3–2 lead.

New York added an insurance run in the fifth. A.J. Ewing walked, moved to second on a balk, and scored on Jared Young's RBI double into the right-field gap, making it 4–2.

Keibert Ruiz singled home Jorbit Vivas in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but Nathan Lavender and Daniel Duarte bridged the gap to Kodai Senga, who closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Torrens's two-out homer in the fourth flipped a 2–0 deficit into a 3–2 lead. Before that swing, the Mets had managed just one hit and looked flat against Irvin, who had cruised through three scoreless frames. The 105.1 mph exit velocity on Torrens's blast — the hardest-hit ball of the afternoon — shifted momentum decisively.

Bo Bichette, 3B, NYM — Reached base in all four plate appearances (3-for-3, walk, triple). His third-inning triple — a slide into third — sparked the dugout ahead of the Mets' four-run rally.

Luis Torrens, C, NYM — 1-for-3, two-run HR (6th), 2 RBI. The defining hit of the game. Six home runs in 217 at-bats this season.

Keibert Ruiz, C, WSH — 2-for-3, 2 RBI. The only National with multiple hits, Ruiz drove in Washington's first and third runs.

Christian Scott, P, NYM — W (4-3), 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K on 90 pitches. Scott has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts.

Kodai Senga, P, NYM — S (3), 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Senga has converted all three save opportunities since shifting to the closer role.

The Mets out-hit Washington 10–5 and went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position against the Nationals' 1-for-6. That gap in timely hitting — Torrens's two-out homer and Young's RBI double both came with two strikes — separated a one-run game from a blowout. The Nationals left only five men on base (against the Mets' nine), a sign that Washington's scoring chances were efficient but scarce until the seventh. Scott induced five groundouts against six flyouts, neutralising the Nationals' power threat after Ortiz's solo shot.

The Mets (56-69) completed their first three-game sweep of the Nationals since August 2024 and have now won nine of their last 12 games. Washington (60-66) has dropped seven of its last ten. For the Nationals, the loss leaves them 33-30 on the road. New York heads to Philadelphia for a three-game set starting Monday, while Washington travels to Miami for a four-game series.

A crisp, well-pitched series finale decided by one swing. Scott outpitched Irvin deep enough for the bullpen to handle the rest, and Torrens made Irvin pay for the one mistake left over the plate. The Mets, playing with confidence after a dreadful first half, look increasingly competitive against division opponents.
