Chicago Cubs vs Chicago White Sox

The Cubs exploded out of the gate against White Sox starter Luis Castillo. Lead-off man Pete Crow-Armstrong launched his 29th home run of the season to right field on the game's fourth pitch. Two batters later, Seiya Suzuki crushed a solo shot to centre — his 22nd — and the Cubs led 2-0 after one inning. Castillo settled after the first, retiring eight of the next ten batters he faced, but the White Sox offence needed time to solve Cubs starter Shota Imanaga. That changed in the fourth. Munetaka Murakami walked, Miguel Vargas singled, and Randal Grichuk deposited a 1–1 pitch over the centre-field wall for a three-run homer, his 10th of the season. The ballpark fell quiet as the White Sox took a 3–2 lead.

The Cubs answered in the fifth. Suzuki walked to lead off and, after a Michael Busch fly-out, Alex Bregman reached on an infield single. Ian Happ grounded into a fielder's choice that put Suzuki on third, and Nico Hoerner punched an infield single to shortstop that brought both Suzuki and Happ home. The relay throw from third baseman Vargas skipped past first — his second error of the night — allowing Hoerner to reach second. Cubs led 4–3.

Cubs reliever Ryan Zeferjahn entered in the eighth with a one-run lead and immediately walked Murakami. After Vargas struck out, Andrew Benintendi — pinch-hitting for Grichuk — turned on a 2–0 pitch and sent it over the right-field wall for a two-run homer, his 13th. The White Sox led 5–4.

David Peterson relieved Zeferjahn and worked out of the inning, but the damage was done: a bullpen lapse had flipped the game.

The White Sox turned to Jordan Hicks in the bottom of the ninth after Trevor Richards retired the first two Cubs hitters. Pinch-hitter Trayce Thompson — listed as "T. Taylor" in the scoring — singled to centre, and Ian Happ followed with another single to put runners at the corners. Nico Hoerner, who had already driven in two runs, lined a single to centre. Thompson scored easily, Happ advanced to third, and the score was 5–5.

Neither side could push across the winning run. Cubs reliever David Peterson set down the White Sox in order in the top of the 10th — or so the scorecard suggested — and Jordan Hicks stranded the winning run at third in the bottom half. The game ended in a deadlock.

Nico Hoerner (Cubs) — 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including the game-tying single in the ninth. He reached base in four of five plate appearances and was the engine of the Cubs' rally.

Andrew Benintendi (White Sox) — Clutch pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth that turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead. Just his second career pinch-hit home run.

Pete Crow-Armstrong (Cubs) — 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a lead-off home run. His 29 homers lead the Cubs.

Randal Grichuk (White Sox) — Three-run blast in the fourth that erased a 2–0 deficit and briefly swung momentum to the visitors.

David Peterson (Cubs) — 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, but could not prevent the two-run eighth that put the Cubs behind.

The Cubs out-hit the White Sox 12–4 but managed only five runs, a reflection of their 10 stranded runners. The White Sox, by contrast, made their four hits count: two of them left the yard (Grichuk's three-run shot, Benintendi's two-run homer) accounting for all five runs. The two White Sox errors — both by third baseman Vargas — directly led to both Cubs runs in the fifth inning.

The Cubs swung at 42% of pitches outside the zone, per the game's advanced data, and struck out 11 times against five White Sox pitchers. Castillo worked 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out four.

The draw leaves the Cubs at 72–53 in the NL Central, 1.5 games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The White Sox stay 65–58 atop the AL Central, 2.0 games clear of the Cleveland Guardians.

The Crosstown Series continues Tuesday (18 August) at Wrigley Field, with first pitch at 7:05 PM CT. The White Sox send Cristopher Sánchez (15–5, 2.58 ERA) to the mound against the Cubs' Justin Steele (12–6, 3.12 ERA), per pre-game reports.

A fittingly chaotic Crosstown Classic that had everything except a winner. The White Sox's ability to maximise limited opportunities kept them in it; the Cubs' failure to score from 12 hits and 10 walks tells the story of a game that slipped away. Each side left Wrigley feeling it should have won.
