Kansas City Royals vs Athletics

The A's struck first in the opening inning. Tommy White delivered an RBI single off Royals starter Daniel Lynch IV, who needed 23 pitches to escape the first after walking two batters. Lynch settled thereafter, finishing four innings with just that one earned run on 45 pitches (27 strikes).

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay deployed opener Brady Basso for 2⅓ scoreless innings before handing the ball to Perkins, who entered with a nine-game losing streak and a 7.27 ERA. Perkins was sharp: 3⅔ innings, one hit, one walk, four strikeouts and zero runs on 53 pitches (34 strikes).

"I've had a lot of experience out of the bullpen, so it wasn't too different for me," Perkins said. "Brady did a great job getting us going. For me, it was just a shift in mindset."

The A's doubled their lead in the sixth against Royals reliever Mason Black. Jeff McNeil singled home a run, and Max Muncy drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Vinnie Pasquantino halved the deficit with an RBI double in the seventh inning off Drew Rom, but the Royals still trailed 3-1 entering the ninth.

Salvador Perez led off the ninth by reaching on catcher's interference for the second consecutive night. Michael Massey singled to centre, and Carter Jensen walked to load the bases with one out against A's lefty Hogan Harris.

Tyler Tolbert, pinch-hitting for Kyle Isbel, worked a full count. A checked swing on a two-strike pitch was ruled — over vehement Athletics protests — a hold-up. Kotsay was ejected arguing the call. Two pitches later, Tolbert grounded a two-run single through the left side, tying the game at 3-3.

"Just try to grind through an at-bat," Tolbert said. "Not try to do too much, and thank God I held up on the check swing."

Kotsay downplayed the checked swing as the decisive moment. "The checked swing isn't the game, right? Obviously, it's a big moment. We get that and we're one out away. But we still have the bases loaded," Kotsay said. "The eighth really led to [problems in] the ninth. At the end of the night, we beat ourselves in this game."

The A's turned to hard-throwing righty Elvis Alvarado. Isaac Collins lined out to centre — the hardest-hit ball of the inning at 96.3 mph — but Witt followed with a first-pitch blooper that dropped into left field, scoring Massey and delivering the Royals' third straight win.

"You know [Alvarado] throws hard, so you just want to look for a pitch in the zone and be ready for it," Witt said. "I was excited. Any time you get a win here at Kauffman, walk-off wins are always fun."

The checked-swing call in the ninth — the moment Kotsay was ejected — gave Tolbert a second life with two strikes and the bases loaded. He made it count. Before that, the Royals had put only one runner on base against Perkins (a fifth-inning single erased by a double play), and the game felt tilted toward Oakland.

• Bobby Witt Jr. (KC): 1-for-5 with the walk-off RBI single. It was his third career walk-off RBI and first since 6 May 2025. The hit travelled at just 66.2 mph but landed perfectly.
• Tyler Tolbert (KC): Pinch-hit game-tying, two-run single in the ninth after a pivotal checked-swing reprieve. Named player of the game by the Royals' clubhouse.
• Jack Perkins (ATH): Despite the loss, Perkins delivered his best outing of the season — 3⅔ scoreless innings, one hit, four strikeouts — after entering with a 7.27 ERA and a nine-start losing streak.
• Carlos Duran (KC): Called up earlier Tuesday, Duran threw a scoreless ninth inning with his first career strikeout to earn his first career win. Manager Matt Quatraro: "I met him like 10 hours ago, but he's a great personality, really fun to be around."

The Royals out-hit the Athletics 9-5 but trailed for eight of nine innings. Kansas City's three-run ninth came on three hits, a walk, and a catcher's interference — not power, but patience and placement. The A's bullpen (Drew Rom, Hogan Harris, Elvis Alvarado) blew a 3-0 lead after Perkins and Basso combined for six scoreless innings. Oakland walked three Royals in the eighth and ninth innings combined, including a bases-loaded free pass to Jensen that set up the tying hit.

The win (53-74) gave the Royals their third straight victory and a 2-1 lead in the four-game series against the A's (49-77). Kansas City hosts the series finale on Wednesday, 19 August. For the A's, the loss wasted Perkins' encouraging breakthrough outing and dropped them further back in the AL West.

A game that was Perkins' to own through six innings became a Royals heist in the ninth. Kansas City showed the poise to capitalise on every break — catcher's interference, a checked-swing hold-up, a walk — and Witt's soft-contact single was the perfect anti-climax to a night of unmet Athletics promise.
