Adell fouling a pitch off his knee and then — on the very next at-bat, three pitches later — launching a 455-foot home run was the sequence that broke the game open before it had truly begun. Instead of a potential early exit, Cleveland's offence rolled to a 3-0 lead after three batters in the first.

"That was one of the louder cracks of the bat I've heard this year," Griffin told MLB.com afterward. "I don't know how many balls have been put up there in that section here, but that was impressive."

Adell eventually exited in the eighth inning after the knee soreness became too much to play through. The Guardians later described the injury as a left knee contusion, with Vogt saying the club will evaluate him day to day.

Carson Whisenhunt (SF): 4 IP, 6 ER, 1 K. The Giants starter was knocked around for six earned runs and never escaped the fourth, falling to 3-4 with a 7.03 ERA.

Bryce Eldridge (SF): 1-for-4, solo HR (14), one run scored. The 21-year-old provided San Francisco's lone highlight with his historic solo shot.

The Guardians out-hit the Giants 12-7 and committed zero errors to San Francisco's two. Cleveland's 7-0 start through two innings was the decisive gap: the Giants never pulled closer than four runs after the first. Cleveland's 10.55 runs per nine innings of offence while Whisenhunt was on the mound underscored how thoroughly they solved the left-hander. The Guardians' bullpen combined for three scoreless innings of relief after Griffin exited, with Craig Yoho closing it out in the ninth.

The win keeps Cleveland 4.5 games back in a crowded American League wild-card picture. At 61-65, the Guardians need to build momentum quickly — and the schedule offers a chance. The Guardians entered this stretch facing teams with a combined record of 202-298 (.404) through the end of August, including the Giants (51-73), Rockies (50-75), Angels (49-76) and Royals (52-74).

"The sense of urgency is there, for sure," Griffin said. "I don't think there's any sort of panic in the clubhouse."

San Francisco (51-73) has lost four of its last five and sits in last place in the NL West. The series continues Wednesday before Thursday's finale.

Adell's injury status is the subplot that could define Cleveland's week, but for one night, the trade-deadline acquisition showed exactly why the Guardians brought him in. Griffin continues to be a reliable stabiliser in the rotation, and if Cleveland can stack wins against this soft stretch of opponents, one blowout could become the spark they need.
