Texas Rangers vs Washington Nationals

ARLINGTON, Texas — Cal Quantrill turned in his finest start of the season, firing seven shutout innings as the Texas Rangers blanked the Washington Nationals 5-0 in the series opener at Globe Life Field on Tuesday night.

Quantrill (5-4) scattered four hits, walked none and struck out five on 91 pitches, lowering his ERA to 3.13 across eight starts this season. The right-hander faced just one batter over the minimum through the first five innings and allowed only one Nationals baserunner to reach scoring position all night — a CJ Abrams double in the seventh that went nowhere.

The Rangers put runs on the board in each of the first three innings, building a lead that Quantrill never needed to second-guess.

Bottom 1st: Wyatt Langford led off with a single, advanced on a Corey Seager base hit, and scored on a Jake Burger groundout that was ruled a fielder's choice RBI groundout. Rangers 1-0.

Bottom 2nd: Brandon Nimmo singled, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a Cody Freeman single up the middle. Rangers 2-0.

Bottom 3rd: The decisive inning. Langford singled again, Seager doubled, and Justin Foscue crushed a three-run homer to left — his seventh of the season — scoring Langford and Seager. Nimmo followed with an RBI single to plate the fifth run. Rangers 5-0.

That was all Jackson Kent (0-1) would allow. The Nationals' rookie lasted 3⅔ innings, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. His ERA rose to 9.39 after the outing.

Foscue's third-inning homer effectively ended the contest before it had truly begun. The blast to left field gave Texas a 4-0 lead and put the game firmly in Quantrill's hands — a pitcher who had allowed only two runs total across his previous two starts (12⅔ innings).

Cal Quantrill, Rangers (W, 5-4): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 91 pitches. Quantrill generated eight ground-ball outs and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 25 batters he faced. CBS Sports named him the Player of the Game.

Justin Foscue, Rangers: 1-for-1, HR (7), 2 RBI, BB. The designated hitter's two-run blast was the decisive blow. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fifth after the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Brandon Nimmo, Rangers: 2-for-4, RBI (48), R. The veteran outfielder drove in a run and scored another, continuing a productive stretch.

Trevor Williams, Nationals (relief): 3⅓ IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. The only bright spot for Washington, Williams held the Rangers scoreless after replacing Kent.

Cody Freeman, Rangers: 2-for-3, RBI, BB. The rookie third baseman reached base three times and drove in the second run of the night.

Texas out-hit Washington 11-7 and left eight runners on base compared to the Nationals' seven. Washington's offence mustered only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position through seven innings. The Nationals' best chance came in the eighth, when Robby Ahlstrom and Jakob Junis combined to allow two hits but struck out three. Tyler Alexander closed the door with a scoreless ninth. The 5-0 shutout is Texas's fifth of the season.

The Rangers improve to 62-64, keeping pace in the AL West where they sit second. Washington drops to 60-67, fourth in the NL East, having lost four of their last six. The two teams meet again Wednesday at Globe Life Field for the second game of this interleague series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.

A clinical, workmanlike win from a Rangers team that held serve at home. Quantrill was the story — efficient, economical, never threatened. The Nationals have now been shut out nine times this season and their offence has scored two runs or fewer in 11 of their last 20 games. For Texas, this is the template: quality starting pitching, early runs, and a bullpen that holds the line.
