Tampa Bay Rays vs Toronto Blue Jays

Bieber and Rays starter Ian Seymour traded zeroes through the first inning before Okamoto broke the deadlock in the top of the second. The rookie third baseman crushed a 1-0 slider from Seymour 414 feet to left-centre field, his 26th home run of the season, leaving the bat at 107.3 mph.

Tampa Bay answered in the bottom of the fourth. Chandler Simpson led off with a single to left, and Junior Caminero rifled a 114.6 mph RBI single off Bieber to score Simpson and level the game at 1-1.

The tie lasted all of three batters. Leading off the fifth, Nathan Lukes launched his seventh homer of the year to right field — a solo shot that restored Toronto's lead. Two batters later, Daz Cameron made it back-to-back solo homers, taking Seymour deep for his first long ball of the season and pushing the lead to 3-1.

Toronto broke it open in the seventh. Against reliever Casey Legumina, the Blue Jays loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. George Springer delivered the decisive blow, lining a two-run single to centre that stretched the advantage to 5-1.

That was more than enough for Bieber (5-2), who allowed one earned run on four hits over seven innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk. He threw 101 pitches, 70 for strikes, and induced eight ground-ball outs.

Back-to-back solo homers by Lukes and Cameron in the top of the fifth flipped a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 Toronto lead. Seymour had settled in after Okamoto's early homer, but the pair of quick strikes — both on fastballs in the zone — knocked him out of the game after five innings (6 H, 3 ER, 8 SO) and handed the Rays a deficit their offence could not overcome.

The margin grew when Springer's two-run single in the seventh all but sealed it.

Nathan Lukes, RF, Blue Jays — 1-for-4, HR (7), RBI, R. Lukes also made the defensive play of the game in the bottom of the seventh, leaping at the left-field wall to rob Cedric Mullins of what would have been a home run.

George Springer, DH, Blue Jays — 2-for-5, 2 RBI. The veteran's two-run single in the seventh gave the bullpen breathing room.

Toronto out-hit Tampa Bay 12-5 and hit three home runs to the Rays' zero — a gap that explains the 5-1 final more than any other single stat. Bieber threw 69.3% of his pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter; Rays starter Ian Seymour walked one but allowed three solo homers among his six hits. In a game where both starters struck out seven or more (Seymour 8, Bieber 7), the difference was that Toronto's home runs travelled over the fence while Tampa Bay's hard contact — including Caminero's 114.6 mph single — stayed in the park. The Rays left only five runners on base, but never mounted a serious rally after the fourth.

The Blue Jays improved to 63-66, still fourth in the AL East but now winners of a road series against a division opponent for only the third time this season. Tampa Bay fell to 76-51, their lead atop the division unchanged but their home dominance dented. The Rays head to Baltimore for a three-game set starting Friday, while the Blue Jays travel to Pittsburgh for a weekend series against the Pirates.

A clean, professional win for Toronto. Bieber looked every bit the frontline arm the Blue Jays hoped they were getting, the power bats showed up in bunches, and Lukes' catch preserved the four-run lead. On a day when the Rays' offence went quiet, Tampa Bay will be more concerned about their starter's vulnerability to the long ball — three homers in five innings from Seymour is an outlier, but a costly one.
