Kansas City Royals vs Detroit Tigers

The Tigers had momentum after scoring twice in the top of the seventh to pull within one, but the Royals answered immediately. Massey led off the bottom of the seventh with a double off Tyler Holton, and an errant throw by McGonigle on a pickoff attempt allowed Massey to scamper home. What could have been a tie game instead became a two-run lead, and Detroit never threatened again.

Noah Cameron (W, 8–8): The Royals left-hander delivered his second straight quality start, limiting the Tigers to two hits over five shutout frames. He walked three and struck out two, lowering his ERA to 4.02 (CBS Sports box score). Cameron has now allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his last four starts.

Vinnie Pasquantino (KC): Finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and an RBI. His eighth homer of the year gave Kansas City an early lead.

Kyle Isbel (KC): Went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI, providing the eventual game-winner with his fifth-inning solo shot.

Troy Melton (L, 7–2): The Tigers' rookie right-hander entered with a 1.60 ERA — best among qualified MLB starters — but was touched for three runs (two earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Player of the match: Noah Cameron. Five scoreless innings on only two hits set the tone for the Royals' bounce-back win.

The Royals out-hit Detroit 10–6 and, crucially, three of those hits left the yard. Kansas City's 10 hits were scattered across seven different players, while Detroit's six hits produced only two runs — both in a single inning. The Tigers drew seven walks to Kansas City's three but left 18 runners on base, consistently failing to capitalise on free passes. Melton had allowed only seven home runs all season before surrendering two in this outing.

The Royals (56–74) remain in last place in the AL Central but have won three of their last four overall. The Tigers (61–67) are fourth in the division and have dropped four of five since beating Pittsburgh on August 17. These two sides meet again on Saturday (August 22) in the second game of this three-game series at Kauffman Stadium — first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Kansas City's formula was simple and effective: quality starting pitching and the long ball. Cameron outduelled Melton, who suffered just his second loss of the year despite a solid outing. The Tigers' inability to string hits together outside the seventh inning continues to define a middling offence that ranks near the bottom of the AL in runs scored.
