Wesneski worked around traffic but never cracked. Donovan Walton singled with one out in the third for Oakland's first hit, and Henry Bolte walked with two outs, but the right-hander stranded both runners. Wesneski allowed just one hit and three walks over five frames, throwing 57 of 91 pitches for strikes with 14 swinging strikes.

Houston broke through in the fourth. Isaac Paredes walked to lead off, advanced to third on Daulton Varsho's double to left, and scored on Christian Walker's sacrifice fly to deep centre for a 1–0 lead.

The Astros doubled the lead in the fifth. Nick Allen drew a two-out walk. Alvarez ripped a double to centre field that scored Allen, who slid home just ahead of the tag. Paredes followed with an RBI single to right that brought Alvarez home, making it 3–0.

Alvarez struck again in the seventh. Raynel Delgado walked to lead off and moved to second on Allen's sacrifice bunt. After an Altuve flyout, Alvarez lined a double off the left-field wall — his 28th of the season — off Athletics reliever Drew Rom, scoring Delgado to cap the scoring at 4–0.

Wesneski's ability to stabilise after early traffic proved decisive. He retired seven of the final eight batters he faced, generating 14 swinging strikes and never letting an Athletics runner reach third after the third frame. Once Alvarez and Paredes strung together back-to-back run-scoring hits in the fifth, the game was effectively settled.

• Isaac Paredes (HOU): 1-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB. Reached base three times and drove in the game's third run.
• J.T. Ginn (ATH): L (8–8). 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 94 pitches, 9 whiffs. After three straight quality starts to open the second half, Ginn has now allowed seven earned runs over back-to-back losses.
• Astros bullpen: Bennett Sousa, Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert and Enyel De Los Santos combined for four scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts to complete the three-hitter.

The Athletics managed three hits — singles by Walton, a double by Jeff McNeil and a single by Carlos Cortes — finishing with a .107 team batting average and just one extra-base hit. Houston's nine hits included three doubles, although the Astros went only 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The under (8.5) cashed comfortably, extending a pattern for an Oakland offence that has scored two or fewer runs in four of its last five games.

The Astros (65–64) sit first in the AL West, a half-game ahead of Seattle (64–66) and one game clear of Texas (63–65). The Athletics (49–80) have lost 11 of their last 14. The series continues Saturday 22 August at Daikin Park (7:10 PM CDT), with RHP Hunter Brown (3–3, 3.67 ERA) opposing LHP Jacob Lopez (5–4, 5.22).

Wesneski's five shutout frames and Alvarez's timely doubles were more than enough against a lifeless Athletics lineup. Houston's -256 closing line reflected the mismatch accurately, and the under trend against Oakland — now 7–3 to the under in their last 10 — is one to monitor.
