Kansas City Royals vs Detroit Tigers

Michael Wacha delivered his third consecutive quality start against Detroit this season, Kyle Isbel and Salvador Perez went deep, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3–1 at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday night for their seventh straight win — the longest active streak in the American League.

Wacha (7–8) allowed only three hits and one run across seven innings, walking one and striking out six. It was the third time in 2026 he has faced the Tigers and the third time he has pitched seven innings; across those 21 innings he has surrendered just three earned runs.

Isbel broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, leading off the bottom of the frame with a 400-foot solo home run to the right-field bullpen — his second homer in as many games and his sixth of the season.

Perez doubled the lead an inning later, crushing a 424-foot shot to straightaway centre, his 17th home run of the campaign.

Detroit cut the deficit to 2–1 in the fifth when Hao-Yu Lee launched a 446-foot solo homer to left for his seventh of the year.

The Royals restored their two-run cushion in the sixth. Jac Caglianone doubled and later scored on a wild pitch from Tigers reliever Tanner Rainey.

Alex Lange worked a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel closed out the ninth for his first save since July 7, 2024, when he was with the Baltimore Orioles.

Drew Anderson (4–5) took the loss after five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

The game swung in the sixth inning immediately after Detroit had shown signs of life. Lee's 446-foot blast in the fifth had cut the lead to 2–1, bringing the Tigers within one. But Caglianone led off the home sixth with a double, moved up on a groundout, and scored on Rainey's wild pitch — a breaking ball that skipped past catcher Dillon Dingler. That 3–1 lead restored the buffer Wacha and the bullpen never relinquished.

Hao-Yu Lee, 3B, Tigers — 1-for-3, HR (7), RBI. His 446-foot solo shot was the hardest-hit ball of the night and gave Detroit a brief lifeline.

Craig Kimbrel, CP, Royals — 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Earned his first save in over two years.

Kansas City out-hit Detroit 5–3, reflecting Wacha's dominance and the Tigers' inability to string together rallies. The Royals scored their three runs on two solo homers and a wild pitch — no multi-hit innings required. Detroit's only run came on Lee's solo shot; they never had a runner reach second base in any other inning. The Royals are now 46–10 when scoring first this season (per ESPN), and their seven-game winning streak is the club's longest of the campaign and the second-longest active run in MLB behind the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kansas City (56–74) remains fifth in the AL Central but has posted seven consecutive wins since last losing on 15 August — a stretch that included a four-game sweep of the Athletics. Detroit (61–67) sits fourth in the division and has lost six of its last eight.

The finale of this three-game series is Sunday, with LHP Daniel Lynch IV (4–4, 2.83 ERA) expected to start for Kansas City. The Tigers had not announced a starter at the time of writing.

This was vintage Wacha — efficient, composed and in command from the first pitch. The Royals are playing their best baseball of the season, leaning on quality starting pitching and just enough power to win tight games. Detroit had no answer for Wacha, and the Tigers' offence outside of Lee's solo blast was non-existent. For a Royals side that lost 15 of 17 between late July and mid-August, this seven-game surge is a notable turnaround, even if the division is out of reach.
