Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Guardians

Adell's three-run homer in the fourth changed the game's complexion entirely. Hughes had cruised through three scoreless innings on 42 pitches, but the four-pitch sequence to Adell — a ball followed by three swings — flipped a 0-0 game into a three-run Guardians lead. • Jo Adell (CLE): The outfielder went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, driving in more runs in one at-bat than he had in his previous 10 games combined (2 RBI). His three-run homer was his third of the season.
• Cade Smith (CLE): The closer allowed a solo homer to Norby but closed the door, earning his 33rd save — tied for third-most in the American League.
• Mickey Moniak (COL): The centre fielder hit his 20th home run of the season, continuing a productive August (.290/.333/.548 in the month).

Cleveland's four runs came on eight hits, with the Guardians going 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position — a significant improvement on their .233 team batting average (27th in MLB). Colorado managed three runs on seven hits but went just 1-for-5 with RISP, a continuation of a broader issue: the Rockies rank 28th in MLB in RISP batting average (.238) since the All-Star break. Bibee generated 14 swinging strikes on 97 pitches (14.4%), his highest whiff rate in five starts. Smith's save was his 33rd of the season, tying him for third in the AL.

The sweep — Cleveland's first since July 10-12 — keeps the Guardians 4.5 games back in the AL Central with 32 games remaining. They've won four of their last five after losing seven of nine. For Colorado, the five-game skid (longest active in the NL) drops them to 26 games under .500 and extends their season-worst losing streak. The Rockies have lost seven of their last nine at Coors Field after winning five of six there from July 25–August 5.

Cleveland isn't a complete team — their offence ranks near the bottom of MLB — but Bibee gave them exactly what they needed: six innings of damage control, allowing one big swing (Adell's homer) to decide the game. Colorado's five-game slide reflects a pitching staff that can't consistently support an offence that scores enough to win. The Guardians' sweep chances against Texas will depend on whether the lineup can repeat its timely hitting without relying on one swing.
