UCV started brightly, pressing high and creating early chances through Kendrys Silva and Edwin Mosquera that tested the Santos backline. But the Venezuelan side could not turn pressure into a goal, and Santos gradually imposed their technical superiority.

Santos dominated the underlying metrics as well as the scoreline. The visitors posted 61% possession and an xG of 2.12 against UCV's 0.40, according to Fox Sports data — a ratio that accurately reflects the gulf in control and quality. Santos completed 90% of their passes (UCV: 81%) and created five chances to UCV's one. The 6-2 corner count and 9-5 shot differential both tell the same story: Santos were in control from the 35th minute onward.

The two yellow cards each side received suggest a contest that was competitive but not ill-tempered.

The result puts Santos firmly in control of the knockout-round playoff tie. The second leg takes place on 28 July at Estadio Urbano Caldeira (Vila Belmiro) in Santos, where the Brazilian side need only avoid a three-goal defeat to advance. The winner of the tie will face Macará of Ecuador in the Round of 16.

For UCV, the mountain is steep. The Venezuelan side must win by at least four goals at Vila Belmiro to progress — a task made even harder given Santos' strong home form in the competition.

This was a professional, measured performance from Santos. They absorbed early pressure, scored at the right moments, and never let UCV believe a comeback was possible. The three-goal cushion means the second leg is a formality, barring a collapse of improbable proportions. UCV's spirited opening 30 minutes showed they can compete, but the gap in quality — and in finishing — was decisive.
