Santos vs UCV

UCV's early sucker punch stunned the home crowd. Santos needed time to compose themselves, but eventually began to dominate possession and territory. The equaliser arrived in the 39th minute when Miguel Terceros received the ball on the right flank, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot inside the near post past Giancarlo Schiavone.

Santos head coach Cuca made a triple change at half-time, introducing Neymar, Willian Arão and Adonis Frías. The tactical reshuffle immediately shifted the game's momentum.

Gabriel Barbosa put Santos ahead in the 56th minute, nodding in from close range after a delivery into the box — though he was denied a second a minute later when VAR ruled a goal out for offside.

Gabriel Menino doubled the lead in the 65th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound after Barbosa's effort struck the crossbar, to make it 3-1 and effectively kill the tie.

UCV refused to fold. Gonzalo Mottes scored with his thigh from close range in the 72nd minute, assisted by E. Mosquera, to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Santos restored their two-goal cushion deep into stoppage time when Rony headed home from a Gabriel Bontempo corner in the 90+5th minute.

Neymar's introduction at half-time. The Brazilian superstar, who started on the bench, lifted Santos' tempo and creative output in the final third. His presence stretched the UCV defence and allowed Gabriel Barbosa and Gabriel Menino more space to operate. Santos' 3.74 xG to UCV's 1.95 reflects the shift — the home side generated 1.68 xG in the second half alone after managing just 0.89 before the break.

• Gabriel Barbosa — Scored one, hit the crossbar leading to the second goal, and had a second ruled out by VAR. His movement troubled UCV all night.
• Gabriel Menino — A goal and an assist. The midfielder's energy in the box was decisive, arriving late to sweep home the rebound that effectively sealed the tie.
• Neymar — Played the entire second half and changed the game's geometry. Santos created clearer chances with him on the pitch.
• Samuel Sosa (UCV) — Scored after 18 seconds and was a constant threat on the counter before being substituted in the 64th minute.

Santos' 58% possession and 25 total shots (9 on target) tell the story of a team that controlled the match after the first 20 minutes. But the 3.74 xG — nearly double UCV's 1.95 — is more revealing: Santos created high-quality chances consistently, while UCV's two goals came from a defensive error and a set-piece. Both teams scored in both legs, but Santos' attacking depth (eight goals across the tie) was the decisive difference.

Santos advance to the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 with an 8-3 aggregate victory. They will face Macará — who finished top of Group A — in the next round. The Brazilian side have now won four of their last five matches across all competitions since late June. UCV exit the tournament after a spirited second-leg display, but their first-leg deficit (4-1) proved too large to overturn.

Santos made harder work of this than the aggregate scoreline suggests, but the quality of their squad — particularly the depth to bring Neymar off the bench — was the difference. Cuca will want more defensive solidity in the Round of 16, but the attack is firing at the right time.
