FC Porto vs Aston Villa

Porto took the lead inside five minutes. A clearance fell only as far as William Gomes, and the Brazilian forward made no mistake from the edge of the area, firing low into the net to make it 1-0.

Aston Villa responded quickly. Luka Lynch collected the ball and unleashed a powerful strike that the Porto goalkeeper could not keep out, levelling the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute.

The match remained open. Villa's Leon Bailey was withdrawn through injury in the 23rd minute, replaced by B. Broggio, and Ross Barkley was booked shortly after for a heavy challenge.

Porto regained the lead four minutes before half-time. Pepê scored from close range after the ball fell kindly inside the box, giving Porto a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Pepê's goal in the 41st minute proved decisive. Porto had enjoyed the better of the chances after the equaliser, and restoring the lead just before half-time allowed Francesco Farioli's side to control the second half without urgency. Villa made 10 substitutions across the match, with five changes at the break alone, disrupting whatever rhythm they had built.

William Gomes — Took his early chance cleanly to open the scoring and was a persistent threat in the first half. Subbed off in the 69th minute after a strong shift.

Pepê — Scored the winner with a poacher's finish in the 41st minute and was involved in several promising attacking sequences for Porto.

Luka Lynch — Villa's brightest spark. His equaliser was a well-struck finish from distance, and he caused problems for the Porto defence before being substituted in the 72nd minute.

Player of the match: William Gomes — His early goal set the tone and his overall movement troubled the Villa defence throughout the first half.

Both sides finished with 50% possession, reflecting a balanced contest with neither team dominating the ball. Porto's 4-2 advantage in corner kicks suggests they were the more threatening side in open play, particularly in the first half. Both teams received one yellow card — Ross Barkley for Villa (29') and a Porto player (79') — in a match played at a high tempo but without excessive fouls.

This was Porto's second pre-season outing of the summer, following a 1-0 defeat to Gil Vicente in their opening friendly. Aston Villa, who began pre-season with a 5-0 win over Walsall, rotated heavily throughout the match, with several first-team players still absent after World Cup duty. Villa's pre-season continues with fixtures against Real Sociedad, Indonesia All-Stars and BG Pathum United before the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on 12 August.

A typical pre-season friendly in terms of substitutions and fitness-building, but Porto's sharper first-half finishing was the difference. Villa's youngsters — particularly Lynch — showed promise, but the Portuguese side's experience told where it mattered. Neither manager will read too much into the result, though Farioli will welcome the positive performance after a losing start to pre-season.
