Mansfield Town vs Derby

Derby struck first in the 22nd minute. Owen Eames played a pass into midfield that Cruz Allen flicked forward, nicking the ball ahead of his marker and releasing Lars-Jorgen Salvesen on the right. The Norwegian striker unselfishly squared for Dajaune Brown, who finished confidently past Mansfield goalkeeper Harry Lewis.

The lead lasted only nine minutes. Michael Smith, the veteran Stags striker, cut onto his left foot and planted a shot across Josh Vickers into the far corner — his second pre-season goal this summer after also scoring in the 4-3 defeat at Barrow on 18 July.

Vickers produced a smart save late in the first half to deny David McGoldrick after the forward broke clear of the Derby backline, and the sides went in level at the break.

Mansfield began the second half strongly and came within inches of retaking the lead: Michael Smith met a corner at the far post but could only divert the ball onto the crossbar. It proved the pivotal moment.

Derby immediately swung momentum back in their favour. Eames fed Salvesen, whose powerful shot forced a save from Lewis, and McGoldrick then tested Vickers at the other end. Sustained pressure down Mansfield's left flank culminated in Charlie Smith collecting the ball on the edge of the area and slotting into the bottom corner in the 57th minute to restore Derby's lead.

Substitute Corey Blackett-Taylor — introduced on the hour — delivered the decisive contribution in the 69th minute. His cross from the left was controlled by Cruz Allen, who swept home a left-footed finish with minimal fuss.

Cruz Allen (Derby County) — The Wales Under-19 international scored one and was involved in the build-up to Brown's opener. His movement between the lines caused Mansfield problems throughout.

Dajaune Brown (Derby County) — Opened the scoring with a composed 22nd-minute finish and was a persistent threat on the counter.

Charlie Smith (Derby County) — Showed composure beyond his years to tuck away Derby's second from the edge of the box.

Michael Smith (Mansfield Town) — Scored a fine equaliser and hit the crossbar early in the second half. He was Mansfield's most dangerous attacking outlet.

Derby's three goals all came from academy graduates, underscoring the production line that John Eustace is able to call upon. Mansfield created several clear opportunities — particularly before and immediately after half-time — but lacked the clinical edge that Derby's youngsters showed. The Championship side's efficiency in both boxes decided a game that was more competitive than the final score suggests.

For Mansfield, this was their final pre-season fixture before the League One campaign. Manager Nigel Clough said after the match he was encouraged by his side's attacking play (Mansfield & Ashfield Chad), but warned that the defensive concentration lapses evident against Barrow earlier in pre-season had re-emerged against a higher-quality opponent. Mansfield's League One opener is scheduled for early August.

Derby completed a productive double-header weekend, also beating Burton Albion in the Bass Charity Vase on 1 August. The Rams now turn their attention to the Championship season, where Eustace's blend of academy talent and experienced recruits will be tested over 46 league matches.

A pre-season friendly that told both managers what they needed to know. Derby's youth production line is in rude health, with three teenagers demonstrating they are ready for first-team minutes. Mansfield can take heart from periods of positive build-up play but will need sharper defending once League One points are at stake.
