Derry City vs HNK Rijeka

The contest effectively ended inside 14 minutes. Derry had started with momentum and Boyce's early chance had the Brandywell crowd — officially 3,645 — believing. Dummigan's misplaced pass swung the tie decisively. As Lynch told BBC Sport NI afterwards: "I am hugely disappointed... I think we need to be a team that plays a little bit more and becomes a little bit braver." He added: "For me, the turning point was the goal. I think early in the game [Boyce] had a little twinge in his hamstring, so I don't think that helped him. However, the big turning point for us was when we conceded and it probably knocked the steam out of us a little bit."

Daniel Adu-Adjei (HNK Rijeka) — Scored the only goal of the night on 14 minutes and could have had more, with two further chances in the second half. Lived off the shoulder of the Derry defence all evening. A strong display after also impressing in the first leg.

Michael Duffy (Derry City) — Derry's most dangerous outlet by some distance. Hit the post with a free-kick, created O'Reilly's headed chance, and kept the Rijeka full-back occupied throughout. The BBC's commentary noted "he has been carrying Derry City for the last two seasons."

Toni Fruk (HNK Rijeka) — The Croatia international controlled the midfield tempo after the early goal. Showed his quality on the ball and fired just wide late on. The first-leg match-winner, he was the most technically accomplished player on the pitch over 180 minutes.

Aleksa Todorovic (HNK Rijeka) — Made a vital early save from Boyce that proved decisive. Untroubled for long spells after the goal but his handling was assured when called upon.

Rijeka's single goal and 2-0 aggregate scoreline undersells their control. Five yellow cards (four for Derry, one for Rijeka) reflected the home side's increasing frustration as the game slipped away. Derry made four substitutions but could not create a clear-cut chance after the 55th minute — beyond O'Reilly's header and Duffy's free-kick off the woodwork. The data tells a story of a side that created little of substance from open play after conceding.

HNK Rijeka progress to the third qualifying round, where they will face Ilves of Finland. The Croatian side kept clean sheets in both legs — an aggregate 2-0 — and look well-organised under pressure.

Derry City's European summer ends after six matches across two competitions. They dropped from the Europa League (losing 5-3 on aggregate to CSKA Sofia) before falling to Rijeka. Tiernan Lynch's side return to League of Ireland action on Sunday 2 August with a trip to St Patrick's Athletic.

Derry started with promise but a single defensive lapse and a failure to convert early pressure into a goal proved fatal. Rijeka were professional, compact and efficient — exactly what is required in qualifying ties. The gulf in quality was not vast, but the Croatian side's ruthlessness made it count where it mattered.
