HNK Rijeka vs Derry City

Fruk's 52nd-minute goal was the match's only moment of genuine quality in the final third. Pavić's pass found Adu-Adjei with his back to goal; the forward's instinctive flick took Derry's centre-backs out of the play and allowed Fruk a clean strike from eight yards. The goal punished the one lapse in an otherwise disciplined Derry defensive performance.

The match statistics tell a clear story: Rijeka controlled territory but created little of substance until the goal. The hosts' early long-range shots (Janković, Pavić, Devetak all over the bar) suggested frustration against a compact Derry block. After the goal, Rijeka's two clear chances — Adu-Adjei's effort and Dantas' follow-up — came from a single sequence, emphasising how rarely they cut through.

Derry's shot count (Duffy's deflected effort, O'Reilly's counter-attack cross) was minimal but each carried threat. The triple substitution at 62 minutes visibly improved their shape and pressing intensity. The fact that the away side created their best chance after going behind, rather than before, speaks to a cautious game plan that nearly worked.

The tie remains finely balanced. Rijeka take a one-goal lead to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium in Derry for the second leg on 30 July 2026. Derry City will be encouraged that they limited Rijeka to a single goal in Croatia and created enough to suggest they can overturn the deficit at home.

For Rijeka, the result extends their strong home record in European qualifying. For Derry, it continues a pattern of narrow away defeats in European competition — the Candystripes now need a first-leg turnaround at home to keep their Conference League campaign alive.

A professional away performance from Derry City undone by a single moment of quality from Fruk. The one-goal deficit is far from insurmountable, but Rijeka's experience in European competition will make them dangerous on the counter in the second leg. The tie is still anyone's.
