NCAA Division I-A football, renamed Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2006, emerged from the need to separate elite college football programs from lower divisions. The formation in 1978 created a distinct tier for major universities with substantial athletic budgets and national recruiting reach. The most significant structural evolution came with the creation of the Bowl Championship Series in 1998, which attempted to match the top two teams in a national championship game. This evolved into the College Football Playoff in 2014, introducing a four-team playoff format that expanded to 12 teams beginning in 2024.
