Bristol Rovers vs Portsmouth

Rovers took the lead in the 57th minute. Joe Quigley's pass deflected off Forde and fell to Cavegn on the edge of the box. The Swiss striker turned swiftly onto his left foot and fired into the bottom-left corner, beyond Schmid's reach.

It was Cavegn's second goal of pre-season and came against Championship defenders he described as "a test" — one he relished.

"I just took the first touch inside with my left foot," Cavegn told BRTV. "I knew I want to go inside and shoot and it went in. It's my job. I'm a striker. I love to score goals."

Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans made 10 substitutions in the 70th minute, with only left-back Ben Purrington staying on. The wholesale changes — switching from a 4-4-2 diamond to a 4-2-3-1 — disrupted Rovers' rhythm.

Seven minutes later, Portsmouth capitalised. Luke Southwood, one of the fresh arrivals, could only parry a shot from Trialist A into the path of Downey, who tapped home from six yards to make it 1-1.

Bobby Kamwa almost restored Rovers' lead in the 82nd minute, forcing Pompey goalkeeper Ben Killip to tip a long-range effort over the bar, but the scoreline held.

Fabrizio Cavegn (Bristol Rovers) — The Swiss forward scored his second pre-season goal and was a constant threat, working the channels and linking play before being withdrawn in the 70th-minute reshuffle. Assistant head coach Paul Raynor said: "He's a finisher. I fancied him as soon as he got on the half-turn — he normally hits the corner."

Riley Harbottle (Bristol Rovers) — Hit the crossbar from a corner and made a crucial diving block to deny Eoin Kenny in the first half. His defensive work was central to keeping Portsmouth at bay for 70 minutes.

Nicolas Schmid (Portsmouth) — Made two important saves in quick succession before Cavegn's opener, denying Forde from close range and Leigh from the edge of the box.

Portsmouth had the better of the first-half chances and struck the woodwork twice, but Rovers' defensive organisation held firm. The 21 substitutions across both sides — 12 by Portsmouth, 9 by Bristol Rovers — made the second half a disjointed affair, with the equaliser arriving during a period of defensive transition for the home side. Rovers' shape change at 70 minutes (from 4-4-2 diamond to 4-2-3-1) coincided with the spell of greatest vulnerability.

The draw was Bristol Rovers' fourth pre-season outing of the summer, following matches against Weston-super-Mare (Bristol Rovers XI), Salisbury (Bristol Rovers XI), and Leicester City (a 2-1 defeat on 14 July). Steve Evans' side travel to Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday 21 July before heading to Scotland for two further friendlies. Portsmouth, preparing for the 2026/27 Championship season, next face Wycombe Wanderers away.

Raynor summarised the afternoon: "Another good workout against a top-quality team. They asked us different questions, but I thought we had most of the answers. Thankfully, it doesn't look like we've picked up any more injuries."

A creditable draw for a League Two side against Championship opposition. Cavegn's finishing continues to be Rovers' sharpest weapon, and the defensive organisation of the first 70-minute unit passed a sterner test than Leicester provided. The mass substitutions broke the rhythm, but that is the nature of pre-season scheduling.
