Youngstown State vs Mercyhurst

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Beau Brungard, the reigning Walter Payton Award winner as the top offensive player in FCS football, threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as No. 9 Youngstown State crushed Mercyhurst 43-10 in the season opener for both teams at Arnold D. Stambaugh Stadium on Thursday night.

The Penguins (1-0) scored on their first five possessions and racked up 484 total yards of offence, holding the Lakers to 241 yards and keeping them from crossing midfield for nearly three full quarters.

Mercyhurst (0-1) struck first, marching 65 yards on the game's opening drive to set up a 24-yard field goal by Rocco Marcantonio. It was the Lakers' only lead of the night.

Youngstown State answered with a 12-play, 72-yard drive capped by Brungard's 5-yard touchdown run. Andrew Lastovka's extra point put the Penguins up 7-3 with 3:59 left in the first quarter.

The floodgates opened in the second quarter. Brungard found Lynn Wyche-El for an 11-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass to Max Welter to make it 15-3. Jaden Gilbert then ripped off a 24-yard touchdown run, and Brungard added a 9-yard scoring scramble with 23 seconds left in the half, giving YSU a 29-3 lead at the break.

Brungard had 98 rushing yards in the first half alone.

The Penguins continued their dominance after halftime. Brungard connected with Bryan Hunt for a 27-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the third quarter, extending the lead to 36-3. Gilbert added an 8-yard receiving touchdown from Brungard early in the fourth quarter to make it 43-3.

Mercyhurst avoided the shutout late in the fourth when a blocked punt by Kaleb Platz set up a 53-yard drive ending in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Alex Gevaudan to Sha'lik Hampton.

Mercyhurst's opening field goal drive was the only time the Lakers threatened the end zone for nearly three quarters. After that initial 63-yard march, the Lakers did not cross midfield until the middle of the fourth quarter, when they reached the YSU 34 before being stopped on fourth down. The Penguins' defensive stranglehold — orchestrated by first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Riemedio, who spent the previous seven seasons as Mercyhurst's head coach — rendered the Lakers' offence toothless for the entire middle portion of the game.

Beau Brungard, QB, Youngstown State — The reigning Walter Payton Award winner completed 20 of 29 passes for 232 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, adding 119 rushing yards and two scores on 21 carries. Jaden Gilbert, RB, Youngstown State — The running back carried five times for 89 yards, including a 50-yard burst, and caught a touchdown pass. His blend of power and big-play speed gave YSU a dangerous complement to Brungard's dual-threat capability.

Alex Gevaudan, QB, Mercyhurst — The Lakers' quarterback threw for 212 yards and a touchdown on the night, but was intercepted twice and spent most of the game under pressure behind a front seven that consistently won its matchups.

Youngstown State defence — Mercyhurst managed just 241 total yards and committed two turnovers. The Penguins forced three-and-outs on half of Mercyhurst's first-half possessions.

The 484-241 yardage disparity tells only part of the story. Youngstown State's 252 rushing yards (5.6 per carry) ground down a Mercyhurst front that could not get off the field on third down. The Penguins scored on five consecutive possessions from late in the first quarter through midway through the fourth — a span of 35-plus minutes of game time. Mercyhurst's only sustained success came on the opening drive (63 yards, field goal) and the late TD drive set up by a blocked punt, meaning the Lakers' offence generated just three points in organic possessions over 58 of the 60 minutes.

Youngstown State, ranked No. 9 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, opens the season with a commanding statement. The schedule does not ease up: the Penguins visit Kentucky of the FBS on September 5. Brungard's Heisman-level FCS production carried over seamlessly from last season, and the defence looks formidable under new coordinator Riemedio, who knows this Mercyhurst programme intimately from his seven years as its head coach.

For Mercyhurst, it was a harsh welcome to FCS football for first-year head coach Tom Sydeski. The Lakers visit New Mexico State on September 5.

Youngstown State played like a top-10 FCS team with a transcendent quarterback. Brungard's dual-threat dominance — 351 total yards and five touchdowns — was the story, but the defensive performance, suffocating a new-look Mercyhurst offence for nearly three full quarters, was equally impressive. The return of Riemedio, scheming against his former team, added a layer of intrigue that the scoreline fully vindicated.
