Morehead State vs Ohio Dominican

Ohio Dominican seized control early. On a 10-play, 95-yard opening drive, quarterback Carson Parker connected with Zack Stevens on a 17-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead. Morehead State answered with a 33-yard Jordan Price field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Sean Westmoreland intercepted a pass on the first play of the second quarter, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run by Mekhi Jenkins. The Panthers led 14-3. Morehead State scored the final 11 points of the half — a 4-yard touchdown run by David Parsons (failed two-point try) and a 35-yard field goal at the buzzer — to trail 14-12 at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to Ohio Dominican. Parker broke a 52-yard touchdown run, then found Luke Hess for a 66-yard scoring strike. Mason Welsch intercepted a pass to set up a 14-yard screen pass from Parker to Roderick Love on the first play of the fourth quarter, stretching the lead to 34-12.

Then the comeback began.

A Morehead State offence that had been stifled through three quarters suddenly caught fire. Parsons threw a 17-yard touchdown to Cannon Dinger, then hit the two-point conversion, making it 34-20. With 2:27 left, he found Sam Harkness from 18 yards out. Then, with 1:07 remaining, he connected with Anthony Ice from 9 yards to tie the game at 34-34.

Morehead State scored 22 straight points in 12 minutes of game time to force overtime against a Panthers defence that had looked dominant through three quarters.

In the first overtime, Ohio Dominican missed a 31-yard field goal. But Sean Westmoreland intercepted his second pass of the game to deny Morehead State the walk-off win.

In the second overtime, Morehead State scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ice but missed the two-point conversion, leading 40-34. On 4th-and-12, Parker found Conner Campbell for a 27-yard touchdown to tie the game at 40.

In the third overtime, under NCAA rules, both teams attempt two-point conversions. Parker scored on a run. Morehead State's two-point attempt fell incomplete, and Ohio Dominican escaped with a 42-40 victory.

Carson Parker (ODU) accounted for five total touchdowns — four through the air and one on the ground — while amassing 361 yards of total offence (277 passing, 84 rushing). He completed 23 of 48 passes without throwing an interception.

David Parsons (MOR) threw for 463 yards and four touchdowns, though his four interceptions proved decisive in a game decided by a single possession.

Sean Westmoreland (ODU) was the defensive star with two interceptions and eight tackles, including the first-overtime pick that kept Morehead State off the board.

Mekhi Jenkins (ODU) ran for 101 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown in his Panthers debut.

Luke Hess (ODU) caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Conner Campbell hauled in four catches for 47 yards and the game-tying overtime score.

Ohio Dominican was outgained 506-589 in total yards by the FCS Eagles. The Panthers ran for 229 yards against just 126 for Morehead State, controlling the ground game, but Morehead State's 463 passing yards reflected their fourth-quarter air raid. The turnover battle decided the game: Morehead State committed five giveaways (four interceptions, one fumble) against one for Ohio Dominican, who intercepted four passes and broke up 11 more. Time of possession favoured Morehead State 32:17 to 27:43.

Ohio Dominican (1-0) opens the season with a monumental win over an FCS opponent. The D-II Panthers travel to Edinboro on 3 September for a 7:00 PM kickoff. Morehead State (0-1) drops its opener despite a remarkable comeback and will look to rebound in Week 2.

A game of two starkly different halves — Ohio Dominican's three-quarter dominance followed by Morehead State's furious rally — settled by the thinnest of margins in triple overtime. The Panthers' four interceptions, Westmoreland's game-saving pick, and Parker's ice-vein 4th-and-12 conversion to Campbell proved the difference. A D-II team beating an FCS opponent in triple overtime is the kind of result that announces a season.
