Lindenwood vs Charleston Southern

A scoreless first quarter gave way to the game's first points early in the second, when CSU kicker Matt Rolader drilled a 50-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 48-yard drive and put the visitors up 3-0 at the 12:16 mark.

Lindenwood answered with an 11-play, 64-yard march of its own. Kicker Graham connected from 32 yards to knot the game at 3-6:00 before half-time.

Then came the sequence that decided the game. Charleston Southern drove into the red zone, reaching the Lindenwood 20-yard line with 13 seconds left. Quarterback Lek Powell attempted a second-down pass, but Edwards read it, stepped in front, and raced 80 yards the other way for the pick-six. The crowd at Hunter Stadium erupted as Lindenwood took a 10-3 lead into the locker room.

The Lions carried that momentum into the third quarter. After forcing a CSU punt, QB Pops Battle found Jalen Smith for a 25-yard strike over the middle, then scrambled left and walked in from 22 yards out to stretch the lead to 17-3 with just under 10 minutes left in the third.

A single play swung the game's complexion. With Charleston Southern driving and a chance to take a two-score lead into half-time, Edwards' 80-yard interception return gave Lindenwood the lead and all the momentum. The Lions outscored CSU 10-0 in the third quarter after the play. Charleston Southern head coach Reggie Barlow's team never held the lead again.

• Pops Battle (Lindenwood, QB): 14-of-21 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown, plus 22 rushing yards and a 22-yard touchdown scamper that put the Lions up two scores.
• King Smith (Lindenwood, DL): Two sacks, consistently disrupting CSU's passing game in the second half.
• Lek Powell (Charleston Southern, QB): 18-of-32 for 208 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in his first career start. Led a fourth-quarter rally that fell just short.
• Steve Zayachkowsky (Charleston Southern, LB): A team-leading 10 tackles with two sacks in a career-best performance.

Down 17-3 entering the fourth, the Buccaneers refused to fold. Powell connected with Mekhi Campfield on a fourth-down touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 17-10.

Lindenwood answered with a 28-yard field goal from Graham with 5:36 left, pushing the lead back to 20-10. But CSU kept battling. Powell found Hunter Green over the middle for a 14-yard score with 2:03 remaining, making it 20-17.

Charleston Southern's onside kick attempt failed, and Lindenwood RB Robert Giaimo converted a first down to allow the Lions to kneel out the clock.

The box score reveals a game defined by the turnover margin. Lindenwood's 14 points off their lone takeaway (Edwards' pick-six) proved to be the difference in a three-point game. Both teams finished with similar offensive output — Powell threw for 208 yards and two scores, while Battle managed 142 through the air and added a rushing touchdown. Lindenwood's defensive line recorded multiple sacks (two from King Smith, two from CSU's Zayachkowsky) but the Lions generated more pressure when it mattered, limiting CSU to a field goal on their two first-half red-zone trips.

Both teams opened their 2026 seasons and OVC schedules on the same night. Lindenwood (1-0, 1-0) starts with a conference win at home, building early momentum in the league standings. Charleston Southern (0-1, 0-1) drops a tight road contest that slipped away on one defensive play just before half-time.

Neither side will have long to dwell on the result. Lindenwood travels to Stony Brook on Thursday, September 3 (6:00 p.m. CT) for a non-conference test. Charleston Southern heads to FBS foe Georgia Southern on Saturday, September 5 (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+), the second leg of a three-game road trip to open the season.

A classic OVC opener decided by one big defensive play. Lindenwood's Edwards created the swing just before half-time, and the Lions' defence made it stand up. Charleston Southern showed the fight of a team that will win games this season, but the Bucs' red-zone issues and a single costly turnover left them on the wrong side of a one-score result on the road.
