Davidson vs Concord

Davidson struck first on special teams. Hudson Altenburg blocked a Concord punt and fell on it in the end zone for a 0-yard return touchdown with 8:18 left in the first quarter — the sort of play that typically tilts momentum entirely in the home side's favour.

Concord answered immediately. Greg Burrell took a hand-off and raced 37 yards up the middle for a touchdown at 4:55 of the first, capping a 9-play, 72-yard drive that announced the Mountain Lions would not be intimidated.

The second quarter was a frenzy. Casey Bullock put Davidson back ahead with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jack Perozek after a 17-play, 85-yard drive. Concord answered in two plays — Devin Kargman found Dom Collins for a 53-yard strike. Davidson responded again through a Jacary Lightsey 9-yard reception, but Collins answered on the ground with a 68-yard reverse that cut the gap to 21-20 after a missed extra point.

Concord seized its first lead after Elijah Owens forced a fumble and Jayden Williams punched in a 2-yard run, adding a two-point conversion through Collins. Davidson tied it at 28-28 with 53 seconds left in the half on an Alani Ajigbotosho 11-yard catch, concluding a 14-play, 65-yard march.

Three plays into the third quarter, Bullock dropped back and threw towards the right sideline. Horn Jr. read the route, stepped in front of the receiver and returned the interception 33 yards for a touchdown at 13:59 of the third quarter.

Davidson's offence had managed 42 points in the first half. From the moment of the pick six, they scored seven points for the remainder of the game. The Wildcats were held scoreless in the third quarter entirely for the first time all night.

Christian Torres added a 26-yard field goal late in the third after a 10-play, 80-yard drive, then hit from 23 yards with 10:29 remaining following a 14-play, 85-yard possession. Those two field goals — one from each edge of the red zone — extended the lead to 41-28 and forced Davidson to chase.

Bullock answered with a 17-yard scramble for a touchdown with 7:00 left, but Concord's defence held on a decisive fourth-and-4 from the Davidson 22-yard line with 45 seconds remaining, ending the Wildcats' comeback bid.

Stanley Horn Jr. (Concord DB) — The pick six changed the game entirely. Horn Jr. read the route perfectly and showed excellent acceleration on the return. It was the margin of victory in a one-score game.

Dom Collins (Concord WR) — The sophomore produced 143 all-purpose yards (75 receiving, 68 rushing) and two touchdowns. His 53-yard receiving touchdown and 68-yard rushing score both came on two-play drives that swung the second quarter back Concord's way.

Casey Bullock (Davidson QB) — Bullock finished 29-of-54 for 241 yards, three touchdowns and one critical interception. He also rushed 14 times for 81 yards and a score — but the one mistake, the pick six, proved fatal.

Greg Burrell (Concord RB) — Eleven carries for 87 yards and a touchdown, including the game-tying 37-yard burst in the first quarter. His 7.9 yards per carry kept the Mountain Lions efficient on the ground.

Christian Torres (Concord K) — The freshman connected on field goals of 26 and 23 yards and went 3-for-4 on extra points. Those six points from field goals proved the ultimate difference.

Concord's 467 total yards came on dramatically fewer plays and less time than Davidson's 343 — the Mountain Lions held the ball for just 23:35 against Davidson's 36:25. That efficiency gap tells the real story: Concord averaged 8.3 yards per rush (242 yards on 29 carries) while Davidson managed 3.0 yards per rush (100 yards on 33 carries). Concord's explosive running game — particularly the Burrell 37-yarder and Collins 68-yarder — effectively did in 36 minutes of Davidson possession that yielded only 343 total yards.

Davidson converted 5 of 6 fourth-down attempts, keeping drives alive while trailing, but finished with zero sacks on defence while Concord recorded three. The Wildcats out-gained Concord through the air (243-225) and on first downs (26-17) but could not overcome the two decisive sequences: the pick six and the pair of third-quarter field goals.

For Concord (1-0, 0-0 MEC), this is the most significant non-conference win in programme history — the programme's first-ever victory over a Division I opponent after ten previous losses. The Mountain Lions have built real momentum ahead of their home opener against Mercer County rival Bluefield State on 5 September 2026.

For Davidson (0-1, 0-0 Pioneer League), the season opener exposed the Wildcats' vulnerability to explosive plays despite controlling the ball for more than 36 minutes. Davidson hosts Elon on 5 September 2026 at Davidson College Stadium.

A game of two halves defined by one defensive read. Bullock and Davidson moved the ball with volume but could not match Concord's explosive efficiency. Horn Jr.'s third-quarter interception was the single play that flipped a deadlocked shootout into a statement win for a Division II programme that will remember this night in Davidson, North Carolina for a long time.
