Holy Cross vs Lehigh

Lehigh needed just four plays to strike first. On fourth down from scrimmage, Johnson burst through the middle for a 65-yard touchdown run, giving the Mountain Hawks a 7-0 lead with 12:26 still left in the first quarter (Connor Poole PAT).

After forcing a three-and-out, Lehigh marched 61 yards in nine plays, capped by Yoder's four-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

Another quick defensive stop set Lehigh up at their own 50-yard line. On 3rd-and-15 from the Holy Cross 33, Yoder broke through the Crusader defensive front for a 33-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 21-0 and completing a 21-point first quarter.

Holy Cross (0-1, 0-1) got on the board early in the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Owen Saraceno, cutting the deficit to 21-3. The Crusaders threatened again, driving 72 yards to the Lehigh five-yard line, but senior defensive lineman Andrew Sharga forced a fumble from first-year Holy Cross quarterback Liam Zelman, recovered by sophomore linebacker Aidan Williams, ending the scoring threat. Lehigh carried a 21-3 lead into the break.

Holy Cross's best chance to flip momentum came late in the second quarter. After forcing two straight Lehigh punts, the Crusaders moved the ball 72 yards behind quarterback David Lynch's passing — including a 32-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver Lincoln Fisher — and had first-and-goal at the Lehigh five-yard line. Sharga's strip-sack of Zelman and Williams' recovery at the goal line killed the drive. Instead of a possible 21-10 or 21-17 game at half-time, Lehigh took a three-score lead into the locker room, and Holy Cross never got closer.

Luke Yoder (Lehigh) — 21 carries, 130 rushing yards, 3 TDs. The senior workhorse was the engine of the Lehigh offence, scoring from 4, 33, and 6 yards out. His 33-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-15 was the back-breaker in the first quarter.

Hayden Johnson (Lehigh) — 9-of-18 passing for 117 yards and a TD; 4 carries for 81 rushing yards and a TD. The junior QB's 65-yard house call on the game's fourth snap set the tone. His 14-yard TD pass to Nick Palumbo in the third quarter made it 28-3.

David Lynch (Holy Cross) — 25-of-40 passing for 313 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs. The junior quarterback was the lone bright spot for the Crusaders, engineering a 13-play, 82-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 15-yard scoring pass to tight end Drae Tyme in the fourth quarter. Myles Abernathy caught nine passes for 129 yards.

Nick Peltekian (Lehigh) — The fifth-year defensive back intercepted Lynch in the fourth quarter and returned it 22 yards to the Holy Cross 10-yard line, setting up Yoder's third touchdown run of the day.

The scoreboard told the story: Lehigh scored 21 points in the first quarter alone, while Holy Cross managed only a field goal across the first three quarters. Holy Cross outgained Lehigh through the air (313 passing yards to 117) but Lehigh's ground game dominated — 248 rushing yards at 6.5 yards per carry against a Holy Cross defence that could not stop the run early. The Mountain Hawks' three first-quarter touchdowns came on drives covering 65, 61 and 50 yards, each lasting fewer than nine plays. Holy Cross's 72-yard drive to the Lehigh five that ended in a fumble represented their best chance to alter the game's trajectory.

Lehigh (1-0, 1-0 Patriot League) extends its regular-season winning streak to 18 games — matching the 2011–2012 squad for the third-longest in program history. The No. 11 Mountain Hawks travel to Georgetown next Saturday (Sept. 5) to continue Patriot League play.

Holy Cross (0-1, 0-1) heads to Colgate next Saturday (Sept. 5) looking to bounce back after a season-opening loss in which their defence allowed 35 points and their offence committed three turnovers (two INTs, one fumble).

Lehigh's first-quarter blitz — 21 points on three straight possessions — was the difference. Holy Cross could not recover from the early knockout punch, and when they finally threatened late in the second quarter, a turnover at the goal line snuffed out any chance of a comeback. Yoder and Johnson form a devastating 1-2 backfield punch that will trouble the rest of the Patriot League.
