Northern Arizona vs Eastern Washington

Eastern Washington quarterback Nate Bell orchestrated three scoring drives in the first 17 minutes. He went 6-for-6 for 72 yards on the opening possession, capping an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard toss to Wesley Garrett at 10:22 of the first quarter. After a Francisco Orduno Jr. 24-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-3, Soren McKee drilled a career-long 53-yard field goal — beating his previous best of 51 yards — to make it 10-3 at the end of Q1.

Bell extended the margin with a 12-yard rushing touchdown at 6:13 of Q2, then found Jaxon Branch for a 14-yard strike at 2:57 to give EWU a 24-3 lead. Both scores came after crisp, sustained drives of 86 and 27 yards respectively.

The game flipped in 14 seconds of game time. Lindsey Graves returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown at 2:44. After Jaylon Jenkins intercepted Bell on the next EWU possession, NAU needed six plays to cover 33 yards, capped by Quran Gossett's 2-yard run at 0:23, and the Lumberjacks went into halftime down only 24-17.

NAU controlled the third quarter with a 14-play, 67-yard drive that consumed 7:52, ending in a 25-yard Orduno Jr. field goal at 7:08. Pennington then hit Jeter Purdy for a 30-yard touchdown at 12:46 of Q4 to give NAU its first lead at 27-24.

McKee tied the game at 27 with a 37-yard field goal at 10:03, but the Lumberjacks responded with an 11-play, 75-yard march. On fourth-and-goal from the 2, Pennington found Isaac for the go-ahead score at 3:54.

EWU reached the NAU 8-yard line with 1:52 remaining but came up empty when three consecutive passes fell incomplete, the final one on fourth down. NAU's defence held on downs inside its own 10-yard line to seal the win.

Graves' 100-yard kickoff return with 2:44 left in the second quarter. Until that moment, NAU had been outgained and looked overwhelmed. The return — a single-play swing the EWU recap called the moment "momentum swung back to the Lumberjacks" — cut the deficit to 24-10 and triggered 24 unanswered NAU points across three quarters. EWU never led again.

• Jeter Purdy (NAU): 105 receiving yards and a 30-yard touchdown that gave NAU its first lead.
• Quran Gossett (NAU): 103 rushing yards, 1 TD, providing the complementary ground game that kept EWU's defence honest.
• Myles Mayovsky (EWU): 18 tackles — a career best, per EWU athletics — anchoring a defence that held NAU to 365 total yards despite the second-half fade.
• Soren McKee (EWU): 2/2 on field goals from 53 and 37 yards, tying his career-long at the time.

EWU outgained NAU 429-365 and held a 26-22 edge in first downs, yet lost the turnover battle 2-1 (one interception, one muffed punt recovery) and surrendered the 100-yard kickoff return. The Lumberjacks converted 7 of 15 third downs (46.7%) against an EWU defence that could not get off the field in the second half, especially during NAU's 14-play, 7:52 third-quarter field goal drive. NAU's 6:09 game-winning drive showcased line control when it mattered most. EWU's 429 total yards and 307 passing yards are cold comfort: the Eagles led by 21 points and let it slip entirely.

Northern Arizona (1-0, 1-0 Big Sky) opens its season with a conference win and a ranked statement. The Lumberjacks visit Arizona on 5 September. Eastern Washington (0-1, 0-1) dropped a game it led by three scores and will host Northern Iowa on 5 September. For EWU, the blown 21-point lead raises immediate questions about defensive stamina and special-teams discipline. Bell's passing performance is a genuine positive, but the offence stalled exactly when the game tightened.

A 21-point comeback built on one explosive special-teams play and sustained second-half control. NAU showed resilience befitting its No. 24/25 ranking; EWU's offence is legitimate, but the defence could not close. The Eagles' 429 total yards will be cold comfort on the flight back to Cheney.
