Campbell struck first on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Sixkiller to wide receiver Evan Austin, capping an eight-play, 75-yard drive on the opening possession (12:07, Q1). ETSU responded swiftly when quarterback Mason Mims hit Trey Weary for an 18-yard score to level the game at 7-7, but Ethan Lawrence's 3-yard plunge with 31 seconds left in the first quarter restored the Camels' lead at 14-7.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth frenzy. Jason Albritton's 6-yard run and TJ Peyton's 3-yard score gave ETSU its only lead of the night at 21-14. Sixkiller answered with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, then found Stevie Keener for a 26-yard strike with 25 seconds left in the half to put Campbell up 28-21. Ewan Johnson's 44-yard field goal as time expired cut the margin to 28-24 at the break.

After both defences held firm for most of the third quarter, De'Von Thomas punched in a 2-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left in the frame. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Justin Garza recovered an ETSU fumble and returned it to the one-yard line, setting up Thomas's second TD from a yard out and stretching the lead to 42-24.

ETSU mounted a late rally — D'Marius Rucker scored from four yards out and Brandon Winton hauled in a 6-yard pass from Mims to cut the deficit to 42-37 with 5:34 remaining. But Sixkiller sealed the win with a 14-yard touchdown run on a 6-play, 82-yard drive, accounting for the final margin at 1:53.

The game shifted decisively in a span of 14 seconds straddling the third and fourth quarters. Thomas's 2-yard run with 28 seconds left in Q3 gave Campbell a 35-24 lead; then, on the very first snap of the fourth quarter, Justin Garza pounced on a loose ball and returned it deep into ETSU territory. One play later, Thomas was in the end zone again. That two-touchdown burst in 14 seconds stretched the lead from 11 to 18 points, and ETSU could not fully recover despite scoring 13 points in the final 10 minutes.

Kamden Sixkiller (Campbell QB) — Player of the Match The senior completed 29-of-42 passes for a career-high 343 yards and two touchdowns, adding 95 rushing yards and two more scores on 10 carries. His 438 total yards of offence were the most by a Campbell quarterback in a season opener in the programme's modern era. His 343 passing yards rank sixth in Campbell single-game history.

Mason Mims (ETSU QB) The Buccaneers' signal-caller was nearly as effective, going 33-of-41 for 373 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. His 80.5% completion rate kept ETSU in the game throughout.

De'Von Thomas (Campbell RB) The sophomore punched in two short-yardage touchdowns — from two and one yard out — that proved decisive in swinging momentum in Campbell's favour during the critical third-to-fourth-quarter transition.

Charles Battaglia (Campbell LB) The senior led all defenders with 12 tackles, including 1.0 tackle for loss and a forced fumble in his Campbell debut.

TJ Peyton (ETSU RB) Rushed 15 times for 80 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.3 yards per carry in a balanced Buccaneers attack.

The raw yardage totals — Campbell 514, ETSU 528 — suggest a near-even contest, but the box score tells a different story about efficiency in key moments. Campbell ran only one fewer play (73 to 74) yet scored seven touchdowns to ETSU's five, driven by a perfect 7-of-7 on PATs and 3-of-4 on fourth downs. The two lost ETSU fumbles were the only turnovers of the game, and both proved costly: one ended a promising second-half drive, the other set up Campbell's back-breaking touchdown.

Despite averaging 0.1 fewer yards per play (7.0 to 7.1), Campbell dominated time of possession 32:53 to 27:07 and converted 6-of-14 third downs against ETSU's 5-of-12. The Camels were penalised 10 times for 93 yards — nearly 30 more penalty yards than ETSU — but avoided the killer turnovers that plagued the home side.

Campbell opens the 2026 season 1-0 for the first time since 2022 and will host Western Carolina on 5 September in its home opener at Barker-Lane Stadium. The 514 yards of total offence are the most in a regulation game for the Camels since recording 613 yards against The Citadel in September 2023.

ETSU drops to 0-1 and will look to rebound at home against Tusculum on 5 September. The Buccaneers' 528 yards of offence — including 373 through the air — showed an explosive passing attack, but two lost fumbles and a defence that allowed 7.0 yards per play are clear areas for improvement ahead of Week 2.

A six-touchdown shootout that delivered on its promise of fireworks, this was a game defined by Campbell's ability to answer every ETSU challenge and capitalise on two critical second-half fumbles. Sixkiller's dual-threat performance — 438 total yards, four touchdowns — was the individual standout, but the Camels' defensive pressure at the right moments separated a one-score game from a two-score final. ETSU will take heart from Mims's command of the passing game but will need to tighten ball security to convert yardage into wins.
