New Zealand vs Egypt

New Zealand, buoyed by their spirited 2-2 draw with Iran in the opening round, started brightly and executed a well-drilled gameplan. The All Whites pressed aggressively and looked dangerous from set pieces.

The breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman rose highest to meet Tim Payne's corner, powering a header past the Egypt goalkeeper. Surman had lost marker Ahmed Fatouh, and the NZL bench erupted as the underdogs took a deserved lead.

Callum McCowatt nearly doubled the advantage with a glancing header that was tipped over the bar, as New Zealand continued to threaten. Egypt, sluggish in possession and struggling to break through disciplined All Whites defending, were fortunate to go into the break just 1-0 down.

Mohanad Lasheen was booked for a rough challenge in the 17th minute, while Sarpreet Singh (20') and Callum McCowatt (34') also went into the referee's book for New Zealand. Egypt made an early change when Hamdi Fathy replaced Rami Rabia in the 41st minute.

Whatever Hossam Hassan said in the dressing room worked. Egypt emerged a transformed side after the interval, dominating possession and carving open the New Zealand defence with increasing regularity.

The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute. Mohamed Hany delivered a pinpoint cross from the right flank, and Mostafa Zico rose to head home — his first goal of the tournament restoring parity and visibly lifting the confidence of the Egyptian side.

Nine minutes later, the moment the Egyptian fans had been waiting for. Mohamed Salah, quiet in the first half, burst to life in the 67th minute. He drove down the right channel, played a sharp one-two with Mostafa Zico, and slotted calmly into the far corner past the helpless New Zealand goalkeeper.

BC Place erupted as Salah celebrated with his teammates — the 34-year-old Liverpool legend delivering on the biggest stage when his country needed him most.

Salah almost added a second in the 81st minute, cutting in from the right and firing a deflected shot just over the bar. But he turned provider moments later.

From the resulting corner, Trézéguet — who had only entered the fray five minutes earlier as a substitute for Omar Marmoush — dived to head home at the near post in the 82nd minute. Salah's assist made it 3-1, and the victory was all but secured.

"It's a great achievement for all the players. It's a great win. It's a great vibe. The next game is very important," said Salah after the match, taking the plaudits amongst his teammates.

The result sends Egypt to the top of Group G with four points from two matches following their opening 1-1 draw with Belgium. New Zealand, who held Iran 2-2 in their opener, remain rooted to the bottom with just one point after Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw earlier on Sunday.

Egypt's first World Cup win in their history — across four tournament appearances — is a landmark moment for Egyptian football. Coach Hossam Hassan lapped the BC Place pitch draped in an Egyptian flag as the travelling support celebrated long into the Vancouver night.

For New Zealand, there was only heartbreak. Despite a brave first-half display and a dream start, the All Whites could not contain Egypt's firepower after the break. They now face an uphill battle to qualify from Group G, needing results to go their way in the final round of group fixtures.

Egypt face their final group stage match needing at least a point to guarantee progression to the knockout rounds. New Zealand must win and hope other results favour them. The race for the Round of 16 in Group G is still very much alive.
